The Region 2 Swim Meet was wrapped up Thursday afternoon at Owensboro Health Healthpark with one local swimmer automatically qualifying for the state tournament in two events.

Owensboro Catholic senior Cort Hobelmann finished first in the 50-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard backstroke to cement his spot at state in those two events as the rest of the locals will have to see how their times stack up with other regions across the state.

“Today was a bit weird,” Hobelmann said. “I had just come off spring break so I had a week off of training and only two days to get my endurance and everything back so it was a bit difficult. Other than that, I had my mind set on trying to break the team record in the 50 free and most importantly just get top-two in my events so I could compete again at state.”

Hobelmann missed a school record in the 50-meter freestyle by .07 so he said that’ll be a goal of his at the state meet.

“To improve at the 50 free, you have to focus on the small things,” he said. “Of course your start and turn are huge in doing well in that race, but breathing, stroke, and how much power you have with each stroke is just as important. Today I messed up in the 50 by taking an extra breath. If I hadn’t done that, I would have gotten the record.

“At state, I look forward to just competing in my two individual races. I feel I have a pretty good chance at placing high in them but mostly, I just really want to be able to swim that 50 one more time to get the record.”

When his career at Catholic is over, Hobelmann said there are many things he’ll remember but the people will be the first thing that comes to mind.

“It’s always fun meeting new people and competing against them,” he said. “It’s also nice to be able to spend time and hang out with the other kids on Catholic. The state trips the past three years have been great and I always look forward to them. As a freshman, I enjoyed being able to watch some of the older, great swimmers compete.”

The only other top-three finisher was Daviess County in the 400-yard freestyle but several locals grabbed top-five finishes, included some relay teams.
