Owensboro junior quarter Gavin Wimsatt is taking his talents northeast to Rutgers University as he’ll be a Scarlet Knight after verbally committing Friday.

Wimsatt chose Rutgers from his final nine of schools that were narrowed down in January.

In addition to the Scarlet Knights, Wimsatt’s final list of schools were Louisville, Ole Miss, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Oregon, West Virginia and Cincinnati.

The Red Devil standout is the No. 3 ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country, according to 247Sports and the No. 1 prospect in Kentucky.

Wimsatt threw for 2,070 yards and 26 touchdowns last season while rushing for 408 yards and adding six scores on the ground en route to being named the Class 5A Player of the Year.

Rutgers is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and competes in the Big 10. The Scarlet Knights went 3-6 last season with a conference-only schedule.

Greg Schiano is at the helm of the Knights and just wrapped up his first season back in charge of a program he put on the map from 2001-11. Schiano is also the former head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
