Apollo’s Harrison Bowman is a four-sport athlete for the Eagles as he competes in baseball, basketball, soccer and football at AHS but now, his name is cemented in Eagle lore as he broke the single-season stolen base record Monday in a dominant win over Warren Central.

Bowman tripled to start the game then scored on a wild pitch, which left his total at 33 coming into his second at-bat of the game.

Bowman then singled to left then after a pickoff attempt at first, was off to the races and easily slid into second for his 34th stolen base of the season as he passed Scott Kelly, who set the record in 1985.

“It feels really cool,” he said. “Being in front of the guy that’s on our fence (Brad Wilkerson), it’s pretty cool just to say that. A lot of greats have came through here, it means a lot to me.”

Former Apollo standout and Montreal Expo Brad Wilkerson is now fourth on the all-time list with 28 stolen bases in 1995. Logan Robbins is now third as he stole 30 bases in 2008.

Coming into the season, Bowman said he knew his role was simple being the leadoff hitter: Get on base.

“Before the year, they were talking to me about the leadoff spot and I thought it was good,” he said. “They said you could turn a single into a double or a triple and even a walk into a double or triple on two pitches. Doing that and being able to get runs for my team, it’s been good and successful this year. It’s led to a lot of wins.”
