Trinity’s stay in the 3rd Region Softball Tournament at Butler County may have been short lived but for coach Jack Melton and his squad, being a fixture in the tournament is the next step for the Lady Raider program.

Trinity fell 8-1 to Hancock County in the final game of Saturday’s first-round as the Lady Hornets advance to play Owensboro Catholic in today’s second semifinal.

The lone run for the Lady Raiders came in the top of the seventh but for a team with but one player returning in 2022, Melton is excited about the future as he wanted the region tournament to be a normal occurrence.

“When we start in January with weight lifting and throwing, that’s been our goal,” he said. “Next year will be my sixth year and that’s our goal ever since I’ve been here. I tell them this is where is where we want to be … We’ll come (district) winner or runner-up but let’s just get there.”

With multiple middle schoolers logging significant innings for the Lady Raiders this season, Melton said he wants to break the stigma that Trinty can’t hang with the bigger teams in the county, district and region.

“We’ve got to get out of that,” he said. “We’re trying to get it out in all sports. I help with basketball too and we’re trying to beat that in basketball too. You’re as good as anybody else, you’ve just got to work hard and they work hard all the time.”

Madison McDaniel (2-3) and Cassidy Morris (2-3) led the Lady Raiders at the plate Saturday as they end the season at 14-17.
