The Owensboro Bombers kicked off the Legion State Tournament strong, grabbing a 7-0 win over Mayfield.

The Bombers put one up on the board first in the top of the second, as Harrison Bowman delivered an RBI single to left field.

After two scoreless innings, Owensboro broke things open in the top of the fifth.

Ethan Gibson and Bowman started off the inning with back-to-back singles, before Jordan Tolle doubled to clear the bases and take a 3-0 lead.

Dan St. Claire followed up with an RBI double of his own the following at-bat, before a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for Owensboro.

Tanner Klee proceeded to single to left, bringing in two runs before advancing to second and leaving runners on the corner with one out.

Aiden Wells singled the next at-bat, giving the Bombers a 7-0 lead.

While Mayfield escaped the inning by getting the next two outs, the damage had been done. Hunter Payne was dealing with his offense and defense giving him ample support.

Payne went the distance, allowing two hits, while striking out one and walking one in the complete game shutout.

With the first win under its belt in the double elimination tournament, Owensboro will return to action for its second game at 5:30 p.m. against Madisonville.
