Daviess County football is looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Owensboro last week, looking to grab its third win of the season against Ohio County.

The Panthers nearly pulled off a comeback win against Owensboro last week, working their way back from down 35-14 to falling 49-42.

Daviess County used a strong running game from senior running back Gunnar Evans to help open things up for senior quarterback Joe Humphries.

Evans had 15 carries on the night against the Red Devils, finding gaps in the defense and turning that into 138 rushing yards.

This allowed Humprhies to methodically run the offense to near perfection all throughout, throwing for 369 yards and four touchdowns on 39/59 attempts.

Panthers Head Coach Matt Brannon said that in order to carry over that level of success into this matchup, they must limit mistakes and play hard-nosed defense.

“We must be able to take care of the football,” Brannon said. “We did a really good job of limiting turnovers against OHS. We must eliminate the big plays on special teams and consistently execute in all three phases. Defensively we must continue our aggressive play and focus on tackling and pursuit to the ball.”

Brannon said that during the week they’ve made sure to keep their eye on the prize as far as their standards for themselves go, focusing on coming out with a lot of energy and maintaining it throughout.

“We have been able to go back to the basics this week and really work on our approach to our base schemes both offensively and defensively,” Brannon said. “Playing back to back City/County games, you always look for wrinkles to help give you an advantage,” Brannon said.  “We have simplified our game plans and are really keying on fundamentals of the game this week.”

Ohio County is still searching for its first win, having lost to McLean County, Warren East and Hancock County.

The Eagles first game of the season is the only one in which they lost by less than two touchdowns, falling 38-30.

Hoping to find its way into the winning column, Brannon knows Ohio County will come out with a fire under them in front of their home crowd.

“They have struggled in their first few games this season,” Brannon said. “We must maintain focus throughout the game and understand that we are going to get their best effort.

Brannon and company are hoping to improve this week while grabbing a win and taking a step closer to their goal of winning a District Championship.

Daviess County will take the field looking to improve to 3-1 overall on the road at 7 p.m. against Ohio County on Friday.

“This is a game in which we expect to execute at a high level,” Brannon said. “We want to focus on goals that we set for each game, and keep ourselves motivated throughout the contest on reaching those goals.”
