Volleyball recap (Oct. 5): OHS, AHS

Owensboro and Apollo volleyball both had successful nights on Tuesday, sweeping their opponents in three sets.

Owensboro vs. McLean County 

The Lady Devils were able to grab its second straight win with the road victory, handling McLean County in three sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-11).

Owensboro came out and set the tone for the match in the first set, grabbing a 25-10 victory. The Lady Devils were able to carry their momentum into the second set grabbing another double-digit win by a score of 25-14.

McLean County fought to stay alive in the third set, but Owensboro couldn’t be stopped and grabbed a 25-16 win to secure the sweep.

It was a balanced offensive attack for the Lady Devils that did the trick, as junior Brooklyn Williams (7), sophomore Chase Mather (6), junior Mia Covington (6) and freshman Maya Joska (5) combined for 24 of the team’s 29 kills.

Joska helped set up the vast majority of their offense as well, dishing out 11 assists while also recording eight aces. Covington followed closely behind in the passing department, recording six assists.

Owensboro now sits at 16-10 overall and will look to extend its winning streak when they host Owensboro Catholic at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12.

Apollo vs. University Heights Academy

The E-gals grabbed its second straight win, defeating University Heights Academy in three sets (25-17, 26-24, 25-23).

Apollo came out the gates looking to take control of the match, winning the first set 25-17.

UHA wasn’t going down without a fight and looked to swing momentum by knotting things up at 1-1, but they couldn’t fend off the E-gals and fell in the second set 26-24.

UHA continued to battle in the third set, but Apollo was determined and earned the sweep with a 25-23 win to close out the match.

Senior Havanah John led the way offensively with 12 kills, while sophomore Ahalia Ramirez set her teammates up all game long with 25 assists.

Senior Abby Spong led the way defensively with 15 digs, while sophomores Kaley and Kelsey Dickerson both recorded eight digs each.

The win moves the E-gals to 11-16 overall on the season, as they will look to extend their winning streak when they host Grayson County at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
