Apollo and Owensboro struggled in its respective matchups on Tuesday, while Trinity (Whitesville) grabbed a win in its first game in two weeks.

Apollo vs. Central

Struggling to score in the second and fourth quarter, the E-gals couldn’t put together enough offense and fell to Central 52-29.

Apollo got out to an early lead in the first quarter, limiting the Yellow Jackets to six points. Meanwhile, senior Amaya Curry scored eight of the E-gals 10 points to take the 10-8 lead into the second quarter.

In the second, Apollo’s offense sputtered and was only able to put up four points. Scoring 13 points of its own, Central was able to take a 19-13 lead into the locker room.

The Yellow Jackets came out of halftime red hot, led by senior Amaya Asher who scored eight of her 18 points on the night to extend their lead over the E-gals to 37-27.

Hoping to make ground in the fourth for a late comeback attempt, Central had Apollo’s offense baffled and held them to two points. These struggles, much like the second quarter’s offensive slump, led the E-gals to a 52-29 loss.

Asher led all scorers with 18 points, while Destiny Jones also finished in double figures for the Comets with 12 points.

Curry was the only player to finish in double figures for Apollo with 17 points, while no other player scored more than four points in the game.

Falling to 4-5 with the loss, the E-gals will look to bounce back against Mercer County at 11 a.m. in their second game of the Cochran Mechanical/Smith Realtors Holiday HoopFest.

Owensboro vs. Evansville Reitz

Unable to find a way to find the bottom of the net consistently, the Lady Devils fell to Evansville Reitz 51-34 on Monday.

Trailing 12-7 following the first quarter, Owensboro had much of the same success offensively despite outsourcing Evansville Reitz and found themselves trailing 22-18 at halftime.

In the third quarter Evansville Reitz’s offense found new life, as Kaelyse Mitchell, Norah Miller and Alyssa Haynes combined for 15 of the team’s 17 points. This offensive outburst helped Evansville Reitz take a 39-28 lead over the Lady Devils into the fourth.

Owensboro’s struggles continued in the fourth, as they were unable to stifle Miller and Evansville Reitz. Miller’s eight-point fourth quarter capped off a 20-point night and handed the Lady Devils a 51-34 loss.

Miller led the way for Evansville, while Haynes finished with 10 points and Mitchell and Matea Bradfield both put up eight points each.

Hughes led the way with 18 points for Owensboro, as no other player scored more than eight points for the Lady Devils.

The loss has Owensboro sitting at 5-5 overall on the season, as they will look to bounce back in their final game of Independence Bank Kentucky-Indiana Classic when they take on McClean County at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Trinity vs. Warren East

Grabbing the lead in the first quarter and never looking back, the Lady Raiders were able to fend off Warren East 57-48 despite a solid second half.

It was a slow start in the opening quarter with neither team gaining much traction on offense, but Trinity (Whitesville) had the edge and gained an 11-6 lead going into the second.

The Lady Raiders didn’t have an outstanding quarter in the second by any means, but they outscored Warren East 12-10 and took a 23-16 lead into halftime.

Warren East did its best to fight its way to a victory in the second half, doubling their first-half points across the third and fourth quarter.

However, senior Cassidy Morris and junior Josie Aull had dominant second halves, helping Trinity put up 34 points.

Aull scored 16 points in the second half—leading the team with 21 total—while Morris chipped in 11 of her 17 to help the Lady Raiders secure the 57-48 win.

Along with Aull and Morris, senior Katherine Hibbett finished in double figures with 11 points to help lead Trinity to victory.

Now sitting at 2-3 on the young season the Lady Raiders have until Dec. 29 for their next matchups, as they are set to take Russellville and Central Hardin at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively in the Lady Raider Christmas Classic.
