Apollo was able to snap its losing streak with a win on Tuesday, while Owensboro’s offense sputtered in a road loss to Breckinridge County.

Owensboro vs Breckinridge County

An eight-run bottom of the fourth was the proverbial dagger for Owensboro on Tuesday, falling to Breckinridge County 12-2 in five innings on the road.

The Fighting Tigers took a quick 3-0 lead going into the second inning of the contest, but after two straight scoreless innings the Red Devils were looking to chip away at their deficit. They were able to do so in the top of the fourth, as freshman Will Hume delivered an RBI single to make it a 3-1 game.

However, Breckinridge County had a lot of offense up its sleeve. Taking advantage of four walks and two errors in the inning, the Fighting Tigers rallied for eight runs to take an 11-1 lead going into the fifth.

Owensboro did get a run back in the top of the fifth, but Breckinridge County was able to get one back in the bottom half of the inning to close the door on a 12-2 win in five innings.

Hume was the only player to record an RBI for the Red Devils on the day, while the team had just six hits as a whole. Junior Connor Hallmark had a rough day on the mound, allowing nine runs—eight earned—on seven hits while walking five.

The loss is the third straight for Owensboro, as they will look to bounce back when they hit the road to take on Trinity (Whitesville) at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Apollo vs. Muhlenberg County

Following two tough losses, the Eagles bounced back by securing an early lead and never looking back en route to an 8-2 home win over Muhlenberg County.

The Mustangs tried to apply pressure on Apollo right away by grabbing two runs in the top of the first, but it didn’t faze the Eagles. Shortly after a leadoff double from senior Harrison Bowman in the bottom of the first, a wild pitch allowed him to score and put senior Nick Judd on base.

Three straight walks followed, allowing a run to cross and tie the game up at 2-2. Junior Aiden Wells gave Apollo the lead with a sacrifice fly during the following at-bat, before a two-run single from sophomore Michael Chaney made it a 5-2.

The Eagles then sprinkled in a run in the third, fifth and sixth inning to back a strong performance from their bullpen en route to an 8-2 win.

After senior Tyler Payne surrendered two earned runs on four hits while striking out three, Bowman, junior Charles Schneider and Cayden Crabtree combined for seven strikeouts and only allowed two hits in three innings of relief.

Chaney and senior Dayton Brown led the way with a pair of RBIs each, while Wells, Judd and junior Josh Mayes all drove in a run on the day.

The win moves Apollo to 6-2 overall, as they will have a day off before they hit the road again for a district matchup with Owensboro Catholic at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
