A late offensive outburst got the Lady Panthers back into the game, eventually defeating South Warren 5-4 with a walk-off single from Hattie Newman.
Senior Selynna Metcalfe opened up the scoring on the day by hitting a two-run homer, followed by an RBI single from junior Katie Walker to give the Lady Spartans a 3-0 after the top of the first.
South Warren grabbed another one in the second inning, but then Raylee Roby settled in and Daviess County’s offense came alive two innings later.
Thanks to RBI singles from junior Kayley Payne, senior Hattie Newman and eighth grader Annie Newman and an RBI fielder’s choice for junior Jessie Daniels, the Lady Panthers had knotted things up at 4-4 heading into the sixth.
It was Hattie Newman who struck again in the bottom of the seventh, driving a ball for a single with the count at 1-2 to score a run and grab the 5-4 home win.
Hattie Newman and senior Sophie Simone led the way with two RBIs each, while Payne, Daniels and Annie Newman all recorded one each.
After giving up four runs in the first three innings, Roby didn’t give up another run. She finished the day having allowed eight hits, while walking eight and striking out 13.
The win is the Lady Panthers third straight, as they now sit at 4-1 going into a road matchup with Muhlenberg County at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
