The Red Devils offense paired with some strong pitching helped them come away with an 8-3 win over McLean County in their first home game of the season.

Owensboro took advantage of a walk and an error early on, as it led to freshman Cayden Ray stealing home to give them a 1-0 lead. A safety squeeze by freshman Will Hume plated another run, as a hit by pitch and a passed ball added two more for the Red Devils as they took a 4-0 lead into the third.

The Cougars offense showed signs of life in the third, getting an RBI single from freshman Houston Whitaker and a two-run single from freshman Jax Lee to cut their deficit to 4-3. However, the Red Devils kept their foot on the gas.

Owensboro grabbed a run in the fourth and fifth, before an RBI triple from freshman Blake Kimbrell and an RBI single from junior Connor Hallmark in the sixth gave them an 8-3 lead.

As they entered the last inning, senior Jacob Mitchell continued his strong relief appearance and shut the door on an 8-3 home win for the Red Devils.

Mitchell pitched two innings, giving up three hits and one walk while allowing no runs and striking out two. Ray had gotten the start, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out seven in five innings pitched.

Kimbrell, Hallmark and senior Kindrick Williams led the way with two hits each, while eighth grader Elijah Hampton and Hume led the way in run production with two RBIs each. Kimbrell and Hallmark both had an RBI each.

Owensboro now sits at 2-2 overall, as they are set for a doubleheader on Saturday by playing South Oldham at 1 p.m. and Bowling Green at 3 p.m.
