Fending off a comeback by South Spencer, freshman Brady Atwell delivered a walk-off single to claim a 5-4 victory for Owensboro Catholic on Monday.
South Spencer grabbed the first lead of the game in the top of the first, but it was the Aces who came out scorching hot. A leadoff single and a two-out single and hit by pitch led to Owensboro Catholic’s first runs of the game, coming in the form of a bases-clearing single for Atwell to go up 3-1.
Following two consecutive scoreless innings, it was South Spencer who retaliated with a three-run inning of their own to reclaim a 4-3 lead. That didn’t last for long though, as senior Everett Munsey delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to knot things up at 4-4.
Owensboro Catholic’s bullpen then came in clutch in the final three innings of play. Junior Jamison Wall delivered a scoreless inning in which he allowed two hits and a walk, while junior Wyatt Jenkins tossed two scoreless innings while allowing one hit and striking out two.
This presented the Aces with the final scoring chance in the bottom of the seventh, as a leadoff single from senior Braden Mundy and a hit by pitch brought Atwell to the plate. Continuing his strong game at the plate, Atwell proceeded to line one to left field to claim a 5-4 walk-off win over South Spencer.
Atwell went 2-2 on the day, recording three RBIs and two walks to lead Owensboro Catholic at the plate. Munsey followed behind, delivering the only other RBI of the day while going 1-4.
The Aces now sit at 16-4 overall, as they have a quick turnaround with a district matchup against Owensboro at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
