Apollo and Daviess County was able to put together complete team performances for wins on Tuesday, while the Raiders were unable to stifle Butler County for the second game in a row.

Apollo vs. Hancock County

It was the Eagles pitching staff that got the job done Tuesday, as senior Tyler Payne and sophomore Noah Cook combined for a shutout in a 3-0 win over Hancock County.

Apollo grabbed the lead early, opening up the scoring in the game in the top of the second. It was junior Aiden Wells who got things going, singling to center to bring in the first run of the game.

An error two batters later allowed another run to score, sending the Eagles into the third with a 2-0 lead. Payne then continued to mow through the Hornets lineup, allowing no runs on three hits, two walks and four strikeouts through five innings.

Cook took to the mound in relief, closing the door on a 3-0 win over Hancock County after getting another run in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI single from junior Josh Mayes. Cook didn’t allow a single hit in two innings, while walking one and striking out six batters in the process.

It was Wells and Mayes who led the way offensively, serving as the only Eagles to record an RBI on the day. With the win Apollo improves to 16-8 overall, as they will take a day off before a road matchup with McLean County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Daviess County vs. Ohio County

The Panthers were able to hold off on a late comeback by Ohio County, as they were able to outhit them en route to an 8-5 win.

Daviess County wasted no time getting out in front, as junior Cason Troutman delivered an RBI single following a leadoff double from junior Decker Renfrow. An error that plated a run followed, as well as an RBI single from junior Layton Huskisson that made it a 3-0 game going into the second.

It was Renfrow and Troutman who came through for the Panthers again in the second, delivering an RBI double and single respectively to give Daviess County a 5-0 lead. Huskisson was also having a solid day on the mound through four innings, having held the Eagles scoreless.

Ohio County finally broke through for four runs in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers responded with three runs across the bottom of the fifth and sixth to build their lead to 8-4. The Eagles got one more in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late as Daviess County secured the 8-5 win.

Troutman and Huskisson led the way at the plate with two RBIs each, while Renfrow and seniors Brock Brubaker and Mason Boswell all tallied one RBI each. The Panthers improve to 14-6 overall with the win, as they will return to action with a district battle on Wednesday against Owensboro at 7 p.m.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs. Butler County

Errors came back to bite the Raiders on Tuesday, as seven errors led to seven unearned runs in a 7-1 loss to Butler County.

After two straight scoreless innings to open up play, the Bears got the first run of the game in the top of the third thanks to a fielder’s choice. Butler County picked up three more runs in the top of the fourth, as all of them came on a pair of errors by Trinity.

The Raiders would get a run in the bottom of the fourth off of an RBI single from freshman Carter Crisp, but that would be all the offense they could muster as they eventually lost to the Bears 7-1.

Trinity falls to 3-13 overall with the loss, as the Raiders will look to get back in the win column on Thursday when they take on Hancock County at 6 p.m.
