The Lady Panthers closed out the weekend strong with a pair of wins on Saturday, while a late comeback for the Lady Devils led to a narrow win over Butler County.
Daviess County vs. Male, Bullitt East
Daviess County was able to grab a late lead in its first matchup of the day with Male, using that late push to help them earn a narrow 3-2 win.
The Lady Panthers got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a solo home run from junior Jessie Daniels. However, the Bulldogs quickly responded by taking a 2-1 lead after a triple from senior Elizabeth Lampe.
Meanwhile reshman Hannah Wright had stifled Daviess County’s offense, holding them scoreless for three straight innings after the long shot in the second inning. But the Lady Panthers found some life in the bottom of the sixth.
Daviess County’s second solo shot of the day tied things at 2-2, this time coming from senior Millie Roberts. Continuing to add pressure on Male, a sacrifice fly from senior Seanna Leibfried gave the Lady Panthers a 3-2 lead going into the seventh.
Daviess County did have an error in the final inning, but junior Raylee Roby was able to bear down and close the door on the 3-2 win.
Roby allowed two runs on five hits, walked four and struck out eight in the win. Offensively, Roberts and Daniels led the way with their home runs, while Leibfried chipped in the game-winning RBI.
The Lady Panthers prowess in all facets of the game showed up in game two as well, as they grabbed a 5-0 shutout win over Bullitt East to round out the Woodford County Invitational.
Daviess County repeated its start in game one against Bullitt East, grabbing the lead in the second inning. However, this time it was a fielder’s choice that led to Daniels scoring and taking a 1-0 lead.
Meanwhile, eighth grader Sophia Cain was keeping Bullitt East at bay, holding them hitless until the fourth inning. This allowed the Lady Panthers to expand their lead in the bottom of the fifth, starting with an RBI groundout from senior Hattie Newman.
An error then allowed another run to score before Daniels homered once again, this time plating two to give Daviess County a 5-0 lead going into the sixth.
Cain was instrumental in the shutout win, allowing just three hits on the day, not walking anyone and striking out eight. Daniels led the way with two RBIs, while Newman and Leibfried both chipped in one apiece.
Going 3-0 in the weekend tournament, the Lady Panthers’ winning streak now sits at six games. Owning a 14-3 overall record, Daviess County now has a few days off before a district matchup with Owensboro Catholic at 5:30 p.m.
Owensboro vs. Butler County
A late comeback did the trick for the Lady Devils on Saturday, as they were able to grab a 6-4 win over Butler County.
Owensboro grabbed the lead right away in the top of the first, but a quick answer from Butler County evened things up at 1-1. However, both teams traded runs back and forth throughout the game.
After Butler County had taken a 3-2 lead thanks to a two-run bottom of the third, the Lady Devils answered with two runs of their own thanks to an error. Owensboro didn’t have the lead long though, as Butler County tied it up at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Devils were not to be denied though, reclaiming the lead at 5-4 thanks to a sac fly from freshman Ellington Embry. Two batters later, an infield single from eighth grader Reese Boswell sent Owensboro into the bottom of the seventh with a 6-4 lead.
Despite allowing a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, senior Brooklyn Keller was able to shut down Butler County and secured the 6-4 win.
Keller tossed all seven innings for the Lady Devils, allowing two earned runs on nine hits, walking five and striking out two. Boswell led the way offensively with two RBIs, while Embry also chipped in one on the day.
Owensboro now sits at 6-11 overall and will look to extend its winning streak to three games when they take on Union County at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
