The Lady Devils offense thrived in its final game of the Softball Beach Bash, while Apollo couldn’t fend off a late comeback to close out the tournament.
Owensboro vs. Middlesboro
The Lady Devils grabbed their first win of the Softball Beach Bash on Thursday to close out the tournament, rattling off 16 hits that led to a 16-1 win over Middlesboro.
Owensboro wasted no time building a lead, getting an RBI single from sophomore Sophie Moorman and a sac fly from freshman Kirsten Tindle. Two batters later junior Lindsey Gibson and eighth grader Reese Boswell hit back-to-back RBI triples to take a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
The Yellow Jackets got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lady Devils quickly expanded their lead in the second. Back-to-back RBI singles by freshman Addison Hill and Moorman made it a 6-1 game, before Moorman later scored on a passed ball to take a six-run lead into the bottom of the second.
Following a scoreless third inning Owensboro’s bats were at it again, exploding for nine runs in the top of the fourth—including a two-run inside-the-park home run from freshman Keely Harris—to take a 16-1 lead. This was all the Lady Devils needed, as they shut down Middlesboro in the bottom of the fourth to earn the win.
Tindle led the way at the plate, tallying three hits and recording three RBIs on the day. Harris followed with two RBIs, while Boswell, Hill, Gibson, freshman Ellington Embry and senior Brooklyn Keller all registered one RBI each.
Keller also had a strong day in the circle, tossing all four innings while allowing one run on two hits, walking three and striking out four.
After a 1-3 week during the spring break tournament, Owensboro now sits at 3-8 before a road matchup with Warren Central at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
Apollo vs. Central Hardin
A late offensive outburst was the deciding factor for the E-gals in a 7-5 loss to Central Hardin to close out the Softball Beach Bash on Thursday.
Following three scoreless innings to start the game, Apollo had gotten to freshman Emma Watkins. The E-gals got two runs in the inning for the first lead of the game, getting an RBI double from junior K’Asia Palmer and a sac fly from eighth grader Arianna Ramirez.
Sophomore Mallory Velotta helped extend Apollo’s lead in the bottom of the fifth, driving in a run on a groundout to make it a 3-0 game. However, the Lady Bruins caught some fire late.
After holding them scoreless for five innings, junior Emmie Bullington allowed five runs in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. Her fellow teammates had her back, rallying to knot things up at 5-5 with a two-run single from freshman Macy Calhoun.
However, Central Hardin wasn’t going to be denied, as senior Madyson Jones had an RBI double and senior Carlee Perry hit an RBI single to give them a 7-5 lead in the top of the seventh. These would be the final runs of the game, as the E-gals went down 1-2-3 and ultimately fell to the Lady Bruins 7-5.
Bullington’s day in the circle went all seven innings, as she allowed seven runs on 12 hits while earning six strikeouts. Calhoun led the way at the plate, serving as the only player to record more than one RBI on the day.
Apollo went 2-2 in the Softball Beach Bash, as they now sit at 5-5 going into a home matchup with Breckinridge County at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
