Owensboro’s Mather wraps up career, Lady Aces finish season strong at State Tennis Tournament

Dylan Mather’s successful tenure with Owensboro tennis came to a close in the Sweet 16 on Wednesday, while Owensboro Catholic girls tennis had a strong showing as a team in the State Tournament.

Mather started off strong on Tuesday morning, defeating Nathan Lawson of DeSales 6-0,6-0.  He was able to defeat Peyton Johnston of Meade County 6-1,60 to advance to the Sweet 16, but was unable to get past Aiden Johnson (6-4, 6-4) of Ashland Blazer and had his senior season end.

Houston and Cooper Danzer didn’t have their strongest performances on Tuesday, falling to Saint Xavier 6-0, 6-1 in their doubles match. This rounded out the boys from the ninth district competing at state.

On the girls side the duo of Olivia Hayden/Aisha Merchant got off to a strong start, defeating Central Hardin (6-1, 6-4) and Casey County (6-1, 6-0) to get to the Sweet 16. They were able to make it to State Quarterfinals by defeating North Oldham 6-3, 6-1, but Oldham County ended their run with a 6-2, 6-2 loss on Wednesday.

Katelyn Mitchell and Claire Augenstein were able to reach the Round of 32 doubles as well for the Lady Aces, defeating Hazard 6-0, 6-4, before falling to Greenwood 6-4, 6-1.

Owensboro had Alexa Salamah and Caroline Smith compete in doubles as well, falling in the first round to Elizabethtown 3-6, 6-3, 0-1.

Ella Cason stole the show for Owensboro Catholic in the girls singles matches, defeating Russell High School 6-1, 6-0, before securing a spot in the Sweet 16 by defeating Paetyn Ashcraft 6-3, 6-1.

Cason’s tournament run came to a close against Reagen Mangan of North Oldham with a 6-0, 6-2, while Charly Hayden also fell in her first singles match to Mangan at 6-0, 6-2. Ella Grace Buckman rounded out the singles matches for Owensboro Catholic, falling to Frankfort 6-2, 6-1.
