The fireworks came a day early for the Owensboro Bombers on Sunday, as they rallied for a 10-4 win over Lexington.
Peyton Cary kicked things off with a bang, hitting a leadoff triple before Josh Mayes singled to take a 1-0 lead two batters into the game. Following a strikeout and groundout it seemed as though Owensboro was done for the inning, but a single from Aiden Wells led to a two-run single from Gavyn Minyard to give the Bombers a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
But Lexington responded swiftly, grabbing two runs in the bottom of the first to cut it to 3-2. After silencing Owensboro in the top of the second, Lexington was able to knot the game up at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning.
However, the Bombers grabbed the lead right back with an RBI groundout from Cruz Lee in the top of the third and never looked back. It was in the fifth where Owensboro really did some damage, where Cayden Crabtree opened up the scoring by reaching home on a passed ball to make it a 5-3 game.
The following at-bat Wells singled to center to bring in a run, before Minyard recorded an RBI single to make it a 7-3 Bombers’ lead. Owensboro was able to add one more in the inning, getting an RBI groundout and an 8-3 lead thanks to Hunter Payne.
The Bombers were able add two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, backing up their pitching staff’s strong performance by taking a 10-3 lead going into the bottom half of the inning.
Owen Payne had gotten the starting nod, tossing two innings and allowing one earned run on three hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Easton Blandford, Connor Hallmark and Dayton Brown handled the rest of the game out of the bullpen, combining to allow just one unearned run on two hits, while striking out two batters.
The one run for Lexington came in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be all they could muster in the 10-4 loss to the Owensboro Bombers.
Minyard led the way offensively for Owensboro, going 4-4 while tallying two RBIs on the day. Hunter Payne and Lee both chipped in a pair of RBIs each, while Wells and Mayes both added one each.
The Bombers have now won four straight, improving to 14-6 overall with the win over Lexington. Owensboro now will take a day off before trying to make it five straight, as they are set to take on Evansville at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday.
