The Red Devils started off the 2022 campaign with a tough road test against rival St. Xavier and fell to them 28-14, losing steam offensively following a good start to result in the loss.

It was Owensboro who was able to start the season off with a bang, getting a 60-yard pick-six from Zach Clark to grab an early 7-0 lead with 9:43 left in the first quarter. However, the Tigers responded swiftly with a three-yard rushing touchdown to even things up with 6:53 to go in the quarter.

The game hit a bit of a stalemate following the score from St. X, as it was until 8:03 was left in the second quarter that either team got on the board again. This time it was the Red Devils who found the endzone, courtesy of a 43-yard touchdown that ended up giving them a 14-7 lead.

But once again the Tigers had responded quickly, returning the kickoff for a 89-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession courtesy of senior Cooper Smith to knot things up at 14-14. St. X struck again late in the first half, as junior DonTre Richardson had a 22-yard rushing touchdown to give them the lead with 23 seconds until halftime.

The two teams came out of the locker rooms determined to stifle the other’s offense, as it took nearly the entire quarter for someone to put another touchdown in the books.

A little bit of deja vu came at the end of third, as Richardson took one 12 yards to the house to give the Tigers a 28-14 lead. Richardson ran for 72 yards total on 11 carries.

This would be all the scoring there would be, as the Red Devils couldn’t spark any offense in the fourth and ultimately lost 28-14. Owensboro falls to 0-1 to start the season, but they will return home in hopes to grab its first win against Apollo at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26.
