After shocking Owensboro last week with its first win against the school since 2018, Owensboro Catholic is looking to pull off another big upset when they hit the road to take on Christian Academy-Louisville.
The Aces football team was clicking on all cylinders last week, limiting the Red Devils offense while getting key touchdowns late en route to the 21-17 win. Sophomore quarterback Brady Atwell threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns on 17-28 passing in the game to go along with one interception, while also running for 34 yards on six carries.
This week Morris hopes to give Atwell more time to survey the field, counting on his offensive line to give him the opportunity to make big plays on third down.
“We are hoping to improve on third and long pass protection to give our quarterback a little more time to read his progressions,” Morris said.
Sophomore Vince Carrico also played a massive role in the win, running for 28 yards and a touchdown on six carries and tallying 42 receiving yards and a touchdown on four catches. The Aces will have a tall task in taking on the Centurions, as they are 4-0 and have won every game by at least 30 points.
“They are very good in all three phases of the game,” Morris said. “Their defense has given up less than 20 points all season.”
Owensboro Catholic will also have to try and stop a strong backfield manned by senior Gavin Copenhaver, as well as containing a dual threat quarterback in junior Cole Hodge. The latter averages 182 passing yards and three passing touchdowns per game, while also running for about 38.5 rushing yards per game.
“CAL’s quarterback is really good and makes plays with both his feet and his arm…” Morris said. “Time of possession, staying disciplined and tackling well [will be key].”
Morris has expected a great week of practice from his team, as their goal has been healing up and fixing the mistakes that they’ve made up to this point of the season. All in all, if his team can play as sharp as they did last week and fine tune a few things, the Aces are poised for a chance to upset the No. 1 team in 3A
