Still searching for their first win of the season, the Eagles football team will have its work cut out for them when they host an undefeated Central Hardin on Friday.
Apollo is coming off of a tough 62-18 loss to Owensboro, having fallen to Owensboro Catholic 42-14 in its season opener as well. Senior Christian Combs led the way offensively against the Red Devils, tossing 212 yards and two touchdowns on 18-31 passing.
His primary target was junior Noah Rhinerson, who racked up 78 yards on eight catches. seniors Bryson Velotta and Carter Contratto had the two touchdown catches, while fellow senior running back Donte Dixon also chipped in 89 rushing yards and a touchdown on six carries.
Eagles Head Coach John Edge and company are hoping to build on this progress offensively, saying that they have to stay in sync and with some help defensively they can snap their losing streak.
“We need to get back to winning,” Edge said. “Need to find rhythm on offense and the defense to keep getting to the ball.”
Meanwhile, the Bruins offense has been on a tear to start the season, grabbing at least 37 points in both of its wins this season. They are a run heavy offense with a plethora of weapons in their arsenal, something Edge said they have been preparing for in practice.
“They are very well-balanced right now. Their QB Zach Spurrier makes their offense work. He is a very heady football player that makes plays. The next guy is their WR/WB Terry Brooks. He is a fast kid that plays both ways.”
Edge said that they have been trying to build back their confidence in their preparation this week, focusing to work on the fundamentals. This will be crucial, as Apollo’s points of emphasis are to get Central Hardin off the field, protecting the ball and taking advantage of scoring opportunities.
The two will face off under the Friday night lights at Apollo, as the Eagles will host the Bruins at 7 p.m. in hopes of getting in the win column.
