Owensboro Catholic and Daviess County volleyball grabbed district victories against Owenbsoro and Apollo on Tuesday, while Trinity (Whitesville) kept on rolling with a win against Grayson County to close out the week.
Owensboro Catholic vs Owensboro
The Lady Aces were able to snap their two-game losing streak on Tuesday, sweeping Owensboro 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-19) on the road.
Owensboro Catholic had a trio of players lead the way offensively, as sophomore Olivia Castlen (15), sophomore Tyranda Stuart (10) and junior Blair Riney (9) combined for 34 of the team’s 40 kills. Junior setter Kennedy Murphy was able to make the offense flow smoothly, tallying 32 assists.
Defensively senior Emily Christian and junior Karson Tipmore led the way in digs with 17 and 10 respectively, while Castlen also added five blocks to her tally on the day.
Sophomore Addie Travis led the way in kills with nine for the Lady Devils, while sophomore Ava Fincher racked up 14 assists. Defensively it was senior Kennedy Thompson that led the charge, earning 19 digs.
Owensboro now sits at 4-10 overall and 0-4 in district play with the loss, as they have a quick turnaround with a road matchup against Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Lady Aces sits at 5-6 overall and 2-1 in district play, now having a week to prepare for another district foe in Apollo at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
Daviess County vs Apollo
The Lady Panthers improved to 3-0 in district play on Tuesday, sweeping Apollo 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-14) on the road.
Seniors Josie Newcom and Mary Grace Hill led the way offensively for Daviess County, tallying 11 and seven kills respectively. Senior Lexi Owen assisted on 18 kills in the game, while also adding seven digs.
Owen followed right behind fellow seniors Emma Rogers and Taylor Roberts in those regards, as the pair grabbed nine and eight digs.
Seniors Kaley and Kelsey Dickinson led the way defensively for Apollo, as the two combined for 19 digs with 11 and eight respectively while junior Jennifer Lee chipped in seven blocks. Offensively it was sophomore Abbie Butterwoth that led the E-gals in kills, serving as the only player with more than four by recording eight in the match.
Apollo falls to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in district play with the loss, as they now have a day off before they face off with Hopkinsville at 7:30 p.m. on the road on Thursday. Daviess County on the other hand improves to 10-7 overall and 3-0 in district play, now taking a string of days off before returning home to host Union County at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs Grayson County
The Lady Raiders grabbed their sixth straight win on Tuesday, extending their winning streak with a sweep of Grayson County (25-13, 25-16, 25-15) on the road.
Junior Hannah Nash led the offense with 15 kills, while junior Georgia Howard added six kills and five aces and senior Abby Payne and sophomore McKenzie McDowell added five kills each. Senior Josie Aull tallied 29 assists in the game, while sophomore Caroline Hall added 10 digs and Howard chipped in nine.
Trinity (Whitesville) moves to 16-4 overall with the win, now taking a day off before returning home to host Butler County for a district matchup at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
