Local volleyball teams were clicking on all cylinders on Thursday, as Owensboro, Trinity (Whitesville), Owensboro Catholic, Daviess County and Apollo all grabbed wins in its respective matches.
Owensboro vs Madisonville-North Hopkins
Lady Devils volleyball had their losing streak extended to five games on Thursday, falling to Madisonville-North Hopkins 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 26-24).
Owensboro couldn’t get much offense on the day, earning 21 kills with sophomore Addie Travis (8) and senior Brooklyn Williams (6) combining for 14 of them. Defensively it was senior Kennedy Thompson leading the way, tallying 14 of the team’s 37 digs.
The Lady Devils fall to 4-9 overall with the loss, as they will look to flip the script and get their first district win of the season after a weekend off when they take on Owensboro Catholic at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
Trinity vs. Edmonson County
The Lady Raiders bounced back from a tough road loss to Owensboro Catholic on Thursday, topping Edmonson County 3-1 for a district win (25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 25-10).
Juniors Georgia Howard and Hannah Nash were on fire all night, combining for 31 kills with 16 and 15 respectively. Senior Josie Aull dished out 36 assists and six aces on the night, while sophomore Caroline Hall (24) and senior Abby Payne (13) led the team with a combined 37 digs.
Trinity (Whitesville) advances to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in district play with the win, as they will take a day off before looking to grab a win in the All-A Classic on Saturday.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Christian County
The Lady Aces grabbed their second straight sweep on Thursday, defeating Christian County with a commanding 3-0 win (25-8, 25-13, 25-17).
It was a team effort offensively, with eight different players recording kills. It was junior Blair Riney who led the team with seven, while she also added three aces and junior Kennedy Murphy, senior Molly Pride added four each to lead the team.
Murphy also led the way in assists with 17 of the team’s 19, while Christian (11), Riney (8), junior Karson Tipmore (8) and junior Isabelle Reisz (6) combined for 33 of their 41 digs to lead the defense.
Owensboro Catholic now sits at 4-4 overall, taking a few days off before seeing Trinity (Whitesville) again in the All-A Classic.
Daviess County vs. Breckinridge County
The Lady Panthers earned their second straight sweep Thursday, defeating Breckinridge County (25-18, 25-11, 25-18).
Senior Josie Newcom was locked in during the match, earning 15 of the team’s 31 kills while also leading the team in digs with nine. Seniors Taylor Roberts and Emma Rogers followed close behind with eight and seven digs, while senior Lexi Owen added five digs to go along with her team-leading 13 assists.
Senior Sydney Mills also added 10 assists, as she and Owen combined for 23 of the team’s 25 assists. Daviess County now sits at 8-5 overall with the win, as they will take a day off before a road doubleheader on Saturday against Greenwood and Elizabethtown.
Apollo vs. Grayson County
The E-gals extended their winning streak to three games on Thursday, sweeping Grayson County 25-18, 25-10, 25-12.
Sophomores Abbie Butterworth and Ava Fazio led the way in the kills department, earning 10 and nine respectively while junior Kelsey Dickinson chipped in seven aces to lead the offense. Dickinson also added 10 digs, with junior Ella Alvey adding 13.
Junior Ahalia Ramirez orchestrated the offense with 24 assists, also adding a block, a kill and an ace. Apollo improves to 6-6 overall with the win, as they will take the weekend to prepare for a district matchup with Daviess County at 7 p.m.
