Daviess County was unable to keep up with an explosive Colonel’s offense on Friday, as a big second half ultimately led to a 73-35 road loss.
Daviess County was first to get on the board in the contest, stopping Henderson County before sophomore quarterback Lake Wilson hit junior Luke Floyd for a 25-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 9:44 left in the first quarter.
The Colonels answered quickly though, getting a 55-yard rushing touchdown from senior Jordan Wright. The PAT was no good though, leaving the Panthers out in front 7-6 with 9:01 to go in the first.
A few drives later Wright came through for Henderson County once again, putting them up 13-7 with 3:40 left in the first quarter with a five-yard rushing touchdown.
It wasn’t until the second quarter that Daviess County was able to find the endzone once again, this time with Wilson hitting senior Decker Renfrow for a 10-yard touchdown. This resulted in the Panthers reclaiming the lead at 14-13 with 7:50 left in the first half.
The Colonels kept pushing offensively though, catching fire with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Junior Eli Green took one 44 yards to the house with five minutes to go in the quarter, before Williams took one 13 yards to make it a 27-14 Henderson County lead with 3:19 left in the first half.
Senior Bryson Parm came up big on the following drive with a 69-yard touchdown run for Daviess County, cutting it to 27-21 with 2:41 left in the first half. But the Colonels were able to score one more with six seconds left in the second quarter, getting a 20-yard field goal to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers were able to keep Henderson County off the board for about half of the third quarter, helping them cut at their deficit. It was a three-yard keeper by senior Jack Ball that did the trick, making it 30-28 with 5:21 left in the third quarter.
Less than a minute later however, the Colonels got right back on top with a 73-yard run from Wright to make it 36-28 after the missed extra point. A few plays later and Henderson County’s defense put some points on the board, getting a safety to make it a 38-28 game.
With two minutes to go in the quarter the Colonels extended their lead to 45-28 on a 40-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Trajdon Davis, but Parm came through with a 50-yard rushing touchdown himself to bring it back to 45-35 with 1:06 left in the third.
Henderson County managed to bounce right back offensively though, scoring again with 16 seconds left in the quarter on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Wright to take a 52-35 lead into the fourth. That’s when the Colonels took complete control of the game.
Henderson County got its first score of the quarter with 7:46 left to play, getting a one-yard keeper by Davis. About two minutes later after a defensive stand, the Panthers punt was returned 35 yards for a touchdown and a 66-35 lead.
The Colonels got one more to top Daviess County 21-0 in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 40-yard rushing touchdown from Williams to make it 73-35 with two minutes to go. The Panthers had a rough second half as a whole, getting outscored 43-14 en route to a tough district road loss.
Wright had a big game for Henderson County with four rushing touchdowns to lead the team’s dynamic offense, while Parm’s pair of rushing touchdowns led Daviess County. The Panthers fall to 5-3 overall with their three-game winning streak snapped, as they will now turn their attention to a crosstown district battle with Apollo at 7 p.m. next Friday at home.
