Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic secured the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the district tournament on Tuesday, defeating Apollo and Owensboro in their respective district regular season finales.
Owensboro vs Owensboro Catholic
The Lady Devils couldn’t capitalize on a first-set win on Tuesday, as Owensboro Catholic beat them 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 25-14, 26-24) to secure the No. 2 seed in the district tournament.
The Lady Aces had a balanced offensive attack to open up the week, as junior Blair Riney (11), sophomores Olivia Castlen (8) and Jaiden Grant (8), sophomore Kennedy Murphy (6) and senior Abigail Williams (5) combined for 38 of the team’s 44 kills. Murphy dished out 32 assists, while senior Emily Christian (26), junior Karson Tipmore (15) and senior Abby Baughman (13) led the defense with a combined 54 digs.
The win moves Owensboro Catholic to 13-9 overall and 4-2 in district play, helping them solidify themselves as the No. 2 seed in the district tournament.
Meanwhile, Owensboro falls to 9-15 and 1-6 in district play, setting them as the No. 4 seed in the district tournament.
Senior Brooklyn Williams (12), junior Chase Mather(8), senior Mia Covington (7) led the way offensively, combining for 27 of the team’s 39 kills. Sophomore Ava Fincher and Covington also orchestrated the offense with 20 and 16 assists respectively, while senior Kennedy Thompson (23), Fincher (9) and Mather (8) led the defense in digs.
The Lady Devils will look to refocus after the loss, taking a day break before hosting Webster County at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Daviess County vs Apollo
The E-gals weren’t able to muster up enough offense on Tuesday, as Daviess County earned a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 26-24, 25-10) to cement their spot in the district tournament as the No. 1 seed.
Seniors Josie Newcom (20), Adylan Ayer (9) and Sydney DeRossitt (7) led the way offensively with 36 of the team’s 43 kills. Senior Lexi Owen tallied 29 assists, while senior Emma Rogers (11), senior Taylor Roberts (11) and Newcom (10) led the way defensively with a combined 32 digs.
The Lady Panthers improve to 17-10 overall and 5-1 in district play to close out the regular season, as they will now take about a week and a half to prepare for their first round district matchup with Owensboro at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17.
Apollo on the other hand falls to 16-13 overall and 3-4 in district play with the loss, making them the No. 3 seed in the district tournament.
The E-gals tallied just 14 kills in the match, while junior Ahalia Ramirez dished out 12 assists. Defensively juniors Kaley Dickinson(9), Ella Alvey (8) and Kelsey Dickinson (7) led the way as the only players with digs.
Apollo has a quick turnaround, as they’ll take a day break to prepare for Edmonson County at home at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
