Apollo football will have a tough test coming off of their bye week, looking to get back in the win column against a hot Henderson County team at home under the Friday night lights.
The Eagles struggled on both sides of the ball in their last outing, falling to McCracken County 34-14. Senior quarterback Christian Combs had a rough day under center, throwing for 106 yards but four interceptions on 7-18 passing.
Senior Donte Dixon and sophomore Niles Board were the only Apollo players to earn a touchdown, rushing for one each while grabbing 48 and 49 rushing yards respectively on six carries each. They were unable to stop the Mustangs ground game on the night as well, giving up 233 rushing yards—with 139 of them coming from junior Zeno Cornelius.
Head Coach John Edge and the Eagles will look to turn things around in those regards on Friday, knowing that Henderson County has a formidable backfield that averages for close to 242 rushing yards per game.
“I think we have to keep Wright and Jaheim Williams in check to win this ball game,” Edge said. “They will get them the ball 80% of the time.”
Edge said that the Eagles will need to be fundamentally sound and each player will need to do their jobs, also knowing that the Colonels have just as potent of a defense as they do offense.
“Their defense is probably the best it’s been for a while,” Edge said. “They like to attack and put pressure on the QB. Saddiq Clements makes them go on that side of the ball.”
Apollo will have its hands full with a 5-1 Henderson County team, as they are riding a three-game winning streak while scoring 30-plus in those games. Edge said that having the by week has helped, as they look to translate some sharp work in practice to the home game on Friday night at 7 p.m.
“We have had a great two weeks to prepare for them,” Edge said. “Great week of practice… We have to take care of the football and not give up big plays. We have to keep working on the little things.”
