Apollo wasn’t able to muster up enough offense on Friday night, as Greenwood poured it on in a 49-12 road loss to close out the regular season for the Eagles.
It wasn’t until the 3:19 mark of the first quarter that either team was able to put one in the books on Friday night, as the Gators got a two-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Greenwood didn’t take long to build on its lead either, getting another rushing touchdown to make it 13-0 with 8:55 to go in the second quarter after a missed PAT.
The Eagles were able to finally put together some offense late in the second quarter, getting a 20-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Christian Combs to senior Carter Contratto. However, Apollo was also unable to convert the extra point, sending the game into halftime with the Gators in charge 13-6.
The Eagles couldn’t add onto the momentum from the late first half score coming out of the locker room, as Greenwood padded onto its lead with a kickoff return for a touchdown and a 19-6 lead with 11:47 left in the third quarter. The Gators continued to pile it on during the ensuing drive, blocking an Apollo punt and returning it for a touchdown to take a 27-6 lead with 10:47 to go in the third.
A few drives later Combs was able to run one in from 25 yards out to make it a 27-12 ballgame with just under five minutes to go in the third, but another rushing touchdown to close out the quarter and two more from Greenwood in the fourth all but wrapped up a 49-12 loss for the Eagles in the regular season finale.
Apollo sits at 2-8 overall as the postseason nears its start, as they will look to bounce back and get revenge in the first round of the district tournament when they take on Central Hardin for the second time this season on Friday, Nov. 4.
