Owensboro will have a big test on the road to close out the regular season, as they will hit the road to take on a strong Henderson County that’s riding a six-game winning streak.
The Red Devils are coming off of another dominant performance last week, defeating Grayson County 55-0 to win their fifth straight. Owensboro’s offense has been on fire during that span, totaling at least 55 points in each game.
It was senior Kenyatta Carbon (80 yards, four carries) and sophomore Deion Winstead (65 yards, six carries) that led the way with the ground game, rushing for a combined 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns each.
Senior Xander Early and sophomore quarterback Trevor DeLacey both grabbed a rushing touchdown each as well, while senior quarterback Kasey Boone was a perfect 8-8 for 105 yards in the contest. The Red Devils will need to capitalize on every scoring opportunity possible this Friday, as Henderson County will be sure to do so.
“We are expecting an extremely competitive, four quarter game from Henderson,” Head Coach Jay Fallin said. “Henderson, like us, has a big senior class that is loaded with talent and experience.”
The Colonels have scored more than 30 points in every game except one this season, while scoring over 40 in the last four games of their six-game winning streak. Sophomore quarterback Trajdon Davis played a big part in their 43-7 win to McCracken County last week, throwing for 77 yards and two touchdowns on 3-9 passing and rushing for 91 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
Henderson County has a strong backfield as well, led by senior Jaheim Williams and Jordan Wright—getting 100-plus rushing yard games from both and a pair of touchdowns from Williams last week.
With strong defenders up front and a strong offensive line to create holes for their explosive offense, the Colonels will give Owensboro a lot to handle at home that they’ll have to be mentally and physically prepared for.
“They are led by a big, athletic, talented and aggressive offensive and defensive line led by seniors Bryce Tapp and Saadiq Clement,” Fallin said. “Additionally, they are talented and fast at the skill positions, especially senior WR/RB Jaheim Williams.”
Luckily for the Red Devils their defense has been strong in its last five outings, allowing one touchdown across the winning streak. Fallin said in order to silence the Colonels, focus and execution in all three phases of the game will be key.
3. Focus and execution in all 3 phases of the game, understanding the game plan and scouting report.
“Maintaining focus and concentration, playing with great effort, weathering the ebbs and maximizing the flows, limiting mistakes, and making plays when they are needed,” Fallin said.
Fallin said that Owensboro has put an emphasis on these things in practice this week, making sure that every player understands the gameplan and knows the scouting report from front to back. As long as the Red Devils can stay mentally sharp on Friday, Fallin and company have a chance to stifle a strong Colonels team and take a six-game winning streak into the postseason.
“Henderson has several great players across the field on offense and defense,” Fallin said. “We’ve got to be assignment sound, pursue the ball, play extremely hard, understand the game plan, and give them a variety of looks, fronts and coverages throughout the game.
