Owensboro and Daviess County filled up the scorebook on Tuesday night, grabbing respective wins over Evansville Central and Hancock County in front of their home crowds.
Owensboro vs. Evansville Central
The Red Devils offense was clicking on all cylinders Tuesday night, as four players finished in double figures en route to an 82-51 home win over Evansville Central.
Owensboro jumped out to an 18-12 lead following the first quarter, but they were able to grow their lead to in the second quarter thanks to some strong defense. While holding Evansville Central to eight points in the quarter, the Red Devils got eight of their 17 from senior Kenyatta Carbon in order to take a 35-30 halftime lead.
Owensboro never slowed down offensively in the second half either, eclipsing the 20-point mark in the third and fourth in order to to come away with the monster 82-51 win. Carbon led all scorers with 26 points, while seniors Cayman Powell and Jalen Rogers also finished in double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.
The Red Devils move to 3-2 overall with the win, as they’ll look to make it back-to-back home wins against Evansville Harrison at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Daviess County vs. Hancock County
Daviess County grabbed the lead early and never looked back, fending off a late comeback effort from Hancock County in a 61-59 win on Tuesday night.
The Hornets drilled four threes for all of their points in the opening quarter, but Daviess County matched them and was able to grab a few more buckets to take an 18-12 lead into the second. The Panthers slowed down offensively in the second quarter, but were still able to outscore Hancock County and take a 29-23 lead into halftime.
The Hornets came out of the locker room hot offensively trying to claw back toward a lead, but senior Evan Hilliard drilled two more threes—he finished with five on the night—en route to grabbing eight of the team’s 17 in the third for a 46-39 lead. Cole Dixon (eight) and Devyn Powers (seven) combined for 15 points of Hancock County’s 20 in the fourth, giving them a chance to come out on top late.
However, senior Denver Dickens sank two free throws to put Daviess County up four with eight seconds to go, all but securing the 61-59 win over the Hornets. Hilliard led all scorers with 19 points, while Dickens finished with 13 and junior Houston Oberst finished with 10 in the win. The Panthers snap a four-game losing streak with the win, as they will now prepare for a district matchup at Owensboro Catholic on Friday at 7 p.m.
