The Aces offense was clicking on all cylinders to grab a win on Monday, while Owensboro was unable to slow Hopkinsville down in their respective loss.
Owensboro Catholic vs. Webster County
The trio of Brian Griffith, Tutt Carrico and Parker Gray combined for the bulk of Owensboro Catholic’s offense on Monday, leading them to a narrow 81-75 win over Webster County to kick off the First United Bank Holiday Classic.
The Aces got off to a slow start in the contest, as they were held to 13 points and went into the second trailing 19-13. But the aforementioned trio of upperclassmen flipped things around for Owensboro Catholic, as Griffith led all scorers with 28 points, Carrico had 19 and Gray had 16 to help them outscore the Trojans in the 81-75 win.
The Aces remain undefeated with the win, sitting at 7-0 heading into a 5 p.m. matchup on Tuesday with the winner of University Heights-Bowling Green in Madisonville.
Owensboro vs. Hopkinsville
The Red Devils couldn’t find an answer for Antonio Williams and KeiMarion Smith defensively in the fourth on Monday night, falling to Hopkinsville 80-75.
In the opening quarter Owensboro failed to get into a rhythm, while the Tigers were getting contributions from everywhere to take a 21-12 lead into the second. But the Red Devils were able to bounce back, getting major contributions from senior Kenyatta Carbon, junior AP Mitchell and senior Talas Taylor to head into the fourth with a 54-52 lead.
Hopkinsville couldn’t be stopped in the final quarter of play though, as Williams (15) and Smith (seven) combined for 22 points to secure the 80-75 win. Williams finished the night with 27 points, while Isaiah Manning had 18 points and Smith had 14.
Owensboro sits at 6-3 overall with the loss, as they now have over a week off before they take on Trinity (Whitesville) at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Dec. 28.
