Owensboro was red hot in a win over Trinity (Whitesville) on Wednesday and Owensboro Catholic was as well in its win over Fleming County, while Apollo and Daviess County fell short in its respective matchups.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs Owensboro

The Red Devils recovered from a tough first quarter offensively on Wednesday, outscoring Trinity (Whitesville) the rest of the way in a 66-44 win at the Sportscenter.

The Raiders were able to hold Owensboro to single digits in the opening quarter, taking an 11-9 lead into the second. The Red Devils bounced back in the following quarter, with senior Kanye Johnson (seven points) leading the way in a 22-point outburst that helped them take a 31-24 lead into halftime.

In the second half Trinity couldn’t fix its offensive woes either, as Owensboro outscored them 35-20 to put the finishing touches on the 66-44 win. Senior Ethan Pendleton led the Red Devils with 13 points, while seniors Kenyatta Carbon had 12 and Johnson finished the night with 11.

Seniors Landon Huff and Nate Hernandez were the only Raiders players to finish in double figures with 11 points each, with no other player scoring more than six. Trinity (5-4) will be back in action against Carlisle County at 10 a.m. on Thursday, while Owensboro (9-3) will take on McLean County at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Apollo vs Greenwood

The Eagles were unable to recover from a rough start offensively, ultimately falling to Greenwood 59-53 to open up the Henderson Chevrolet, Buick, GMC Classic.

The Gators set the tone for the game right out of the gates, getting eight of their 13 first-quarter points from sophomore Nick Simpson. Meanwhile, Apollo couldn’t find a rhythm and was held to single digits and headed into the second with a 13-7 deficit.

The Eagles couldn’t slow down Simpson throughout the game, as he finished with 20 points while his counterparts Asher Pettus (16) and Luke Stansbury (12) followed close behind to help Greenwood secure the 59-53 win. Freshman Kobe Kelly led Apollo with 15 points, while senior Donte Dixon (14) and senior Zjhan Tutt (10) were the only other players to finish in double figures.

The Eagles now sit at 0-9 overall after falling short of their first win, as they will now look to bounce back against Allen-County Scottsville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Daviess County vs South Warren

After losing the lead in the second quarter Daviess County was never able to get it back, as South Warren fended off a comeback in a 56-55 win.

The Panthers got off to a strong start thanks to junior Gage Phelps, as he grabbed eight of their points in the first en route to a 17-13 lead by the end of the quarter. But Daviess County was only able to sink three shots and two free throws in the second, as the Spartans took a 29-25 lead into halftime.

Phelps came alive again coming out of the locker room, tallying nine of the team’s 15 points to cut the Panthers deficit to 43-40 going into the fourth. Daviess County was able to outscore Greenwood for the second straight quarter in the fourth, but it was too little too late as Brandon Rowe (25 points) and Drew Hudson (14 points) led the Gators to the narrow 56-55 win.

Phelps led the Panthers with 19 points, while seniors Evan Hillard (14) and Denver Dickens (10) followed in the loss. Daviess County falls to 3-7 overall and will look to bounce back against Clinton County at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Owensboro Catholic vs Fleming County

The Aces were clicking on all cylinders offensively on Wednesday, as four of their five starters finished in double figures to defeat Fleming County 76-63 in their first Independence Bank Classic game.

Owensboro Catholic got off to a strong start thanks to big quarters from seniors Parker Gray (nine) and Brian Griffith (eight), as the two combined for 17 of the team’s points en route to a 24-15 lead following the first. Once having the lead the Aces never lost it, as Griffith (22), Gray (16), junior Tutt Carrico (16) and sophomore Luke Beickman (13) all finished in double figures in the 76-63 win.

Owensboro Catholic now sits at 9-1 overall after bouncing back from its first loss of the year, now looking to continue its winning ways against Edmonson County at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.
