Trinity and Owensboro Catholic were strong offensively in its respective wins on Tuesday night, while the Panthers couldn’t find a way to stifle Butler County in its second straight loss.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs Todd County Central
A strong fourth quarter allowed the Raiders to grab their second straight road win to start the season, holding off Todd County Central 57-54 getting ample contributions offensively from their seniors.
Both teams had traded points back and forth throughout much of the game, but Trinity (Whitesville) found themselves down 39-38 going into the fourth despite leading early on. It was in the fourth that senior Landon Huff (10) and Nathan Hernandez (six) got going, combining 16 of the team’s 19 en route to the 57-54 win.
Huff finished the game with a team-leading 18 points, while Hernandez added 14 and senior Landon Smith chipped in 10. Nolan Mills also had seven and Nick Goetz had five on the night, as seniors accounted for 54 of the Raiders 57 points in the win.
Trinity improves to 3-0 to start the season, as they will now hit the road on Friday for their matchup against Butler County at 7:30 p.m.
Daviess County vs Butler County
The Panthers couldn’t find a way to stifle Butler County’s powerful duo of Ty Price and Lawson Rice on Tuesday night, as they ultimately fell 82-74 on the road.
Daviess County got off to a strong start on the night, getting 12 points from sophomore Gage Phelps in the first half to take a narrow 34-31 lead into halftime. But the Bears picked up steam in the second half, outsourcing the Panthers 22-14 thanks to Price and Rice in order to take a 53-48 lead into the fourth.
It was there that Price (12) and Rice (11) combined for 23 of Butler County’s 29 fourth quarter points, as they spoiled senior Jack Payne’s 18-point effort en route to the 82-74 win.
Phelps also had six in the fourth, leading the way with 25 points while Payne followed close behind with 23 for the Panthers. But Price led all scorers with 35 points, with Rice finishing with 22 points to lead the Bears to the win.
Daviess County falls to 1-2 to start the season and will have another tough road matchup on Friday, as they are set to take on Owensboro at 7 p.m.
Owensboro Catholic vs Hancock County
The Aces were firing on all cylinders offensively on Tuesday night, as senior Brian Griffith was one of four players in double figures with a team-leading 32 in a 78-67 road win over Hancock County.
Owensboro Catholic was on fire from deep in the first half, as Griffith hit three, senior Parker Gray hit two and senior Noah Johnson hit the last of their six threes to take a 36-33 lead into halftime. The Aces were able to keep momentum on their side to start the second half as well, limiting the Hornets to single digits in the third in order to grow their lead to 55-44 going into the fourth.
This allowed Owensboro Catholic to close out the game strong, as Griffith grabbed eight more points in the fourth—finishing the game leading all scorers with 32—to secure the 78-67 win. Gray followed close behind with 14 points, while junior Tutt Carrico had 13 and junior Deuce Sims had 10.
The Aces improve to 3-0 to start the season with the win, as they will look to stay when they open up district play at home against Apollo at 7 p.m.
