A strong defensive effort paired with a monster second half from junior A’Lyrica Hughes helped Owensboro grab its first district win of the season, defeating the Lady Panthers 55-38 at home on Friday night.
The Lady Devils got off to a strong start, getting contributions from multiple players offensively while holding Daviess County to single digits to go into the second quarter up 16-7. The Lady Panthers fought right back in the second though, getting 10 points from sophomore Zoey Beehn to lead the way.
She hit two of Daviess County’s three threes in the quarter, as senior Adylan Ayer added five while helping limit Owensboro to nine points to take a 26-25 lead into the locker room. The Lady Devils weren’t going anywhere though, as Hughes rattled off 13 of their 15 points in the third to take a 40-34 lead into the fourth.
The Lady Panthers offensive struggles continued in the fourth, as Ayer and Beehn were the only two players to get a basket. Meanwhile, former Daviess County guard CJ Paige (seven) and Hughes (six) combined for 13 of the team’s 15 points in the fourth, as Owensboro wrapped up its first district win of the season at 55-38.
Hughes led all scorers with 27 on the night, while Paige was the only other Lady Devil in double figures with 12. It was Beehn who led the way for the Lady Panthers, finishing with 17 points.
Owensboro remains undefeated after grabbing its first district win of the season, sitting at 5-0 going into a road matchup with Evansville Reitz at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Daviess County on the other hand falls to 2-2 on the season, quickly hitting the road again on Saturday to take on Logan County at 3:30 p.m.
