Owensboro Catholic, Daviess County and Owensboro utilized efficient offense to grab wins on Tuesday night, while Trinity (Whitesville) fell just short in overtime against Evansville Christian.
Owensboro Catholic vs Evansville Memorial
After grabbing the lead early it was a strong second half that willed the Aces to a win on Tuesday, defeating Evansville Memorial 74-58.
Both teams traded points back and forth in the first half, but it was Owensboro Catholic who had a slight 33-29 lead at halftime. Senior Parker Gray played a big part in the Aces start offensively, hitting a pair of threes and finishing with 13 points going into the locker room.
Threes kept falling for Owensboro Catholic in the third as well, with the team drilling four towards an 18-point quarter. In the meantime Evansville Memorial were only able to get three baskets and a free throw in the quarter, giving the Aces a 51-36 lead going into the fourth.
Evansville Memorial had its best quarter of the night offensively in the fourth, but their comeback efforts fell short as Owensboro Catholic narrowly outscored them once again to seal the 74-58 win. Gray led the Aces with 17 points in the game, while sophomore Luke Beickman had 15 and senior Brian Griffith had 11.
Owensboro Catholic sits at 14-1 and is currently riding a seven-game winning streak, as they will look to keep things rolling on the road Friday in a tough district matchup against Owensboro at 7 p.m.
Trinity (Whitesville) vs Evansville Christian
The Raiders struggled to find a rhythm offensively on Tuesday, as they fell in overtime to Evansville Christian on the road 44-37.
Both teams struggled early on, but Evansville Christian was able to crack double figures to take an 11-9 lead going into the second. Trinity (Whitesville) wasn’t able to improve much in the following quarter either, as they went into halftime trailing 21-19.
The Raiders were able to limit Evansville Christian to seven points in the third, but were only able to get five themselves and went into the fourth down 28-24. But senior Landon Smith helped Trinity bounce back in the fourth, scoring nine of the team’s 13 points as they forced overtime tied at 37-37.
The Raiders didn’t have the same luck offensively in overtime though, as they tallied just one point and ultimately fell 44-37. Smith was the only player to finish with more than eight on the night, leading them with 19.
Trinity falls to 7-6 overall with the loss, as they’ll now take a few days to prepare for a district battle at home on Friday against Edmonson County at 7:30.
Daviess County vs Breckinridge County
Strong defense early and an all-around performance offensively helped catapult Daviess County to a win on Tuesday, taking down the Fighting Tigers 68-56.
Senior Evan Hillard (eight) and junior Gage Phelps (five) helped get the Panthers going early, combining for all but two of their points en route to a 15-8 lead going into the second. Daviess County was able to hold Breckinridge County to 10 in the second as well, building their lead to a 27-18 at halftime.
The Panthers caught fire from deep in the third as well, with junior Houston Oberst hitting three and Phelps hitting one in a seven-point quarter himself to help make it a 48-30 game going into the fourth. The Fighting Tigers tried to claw their way back into the game with 26 points in the fourth, but Daviess County went 18-21 from the charity stripe in the quarter to help hold them off for a 68-56 win.
Oberst led the way with a team-leading four threes and 18 points, Phelps hit a pair from deep and had 17 points and Hillard hit three and had 14 points as the trio had all of the Panthers points from deep. Daviess County improves to 5-9 overall with the win, as they’ll look to grab
Apollo vs Hopkins County Central
The Eagles offense clicked at home against Hopkins County Central on Tuesday, getting contributions from multiple players in a 63-53 win.
Both teams got off to a slow start, but it was Apollo who couldn’t crack double figures and was behind 10-8 heading into the second. In the following senior Zjhan Tutt (two) and freshman Kobe Kelly (one) combined for three threes to help the Eagles climb their way to a 23-21 halftime lead.
Tutt continued to lead the charge in the second half with eight points in the third quarter, while Apollo grabbed 22 points to take a 45-36 lead going into the fourth. Tutt added five more in the fourth to finish with 25 points on the night, helping the Eagles put away Hopkins County Central by a score of 63-53.
Behind Tutt senior Donte Dixon and Kelly were the only players to finish in double figures, tallying 12 and 11 respectively. Apollo improves to 3-11 with its first two-game winning streak of the season, as they now have to prepare for a district battle with Daviess County at home at 7 p.m. on Friday.
