Cromwell Radio and Foreman-Watson-Holtrey, LLP, have recognized the best high school athletic programs from the Third Region in the 2021-22 season this week, as Daviess County boys athletics and Owensboro Catholic girls athletics were named the winners of the inaugural FWH Legal Cup.

The cup winners were decided by a points system, spread out over winners of regional titles, number of wins in a season and more than can be seen below. The sports that were accounted for were football, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf and track.

Daviess County won by 55 points, scoring a 185 while Owensboro Catholic finished with a 130, and Owensboro boys finished with a 125.  This will be the first time that the cup is celebrated, as they will start presenting the awards in August in the future.

The idea came from the 102.7 The Game crew over at Cromwell Radio and when FWH Managing Partner heard about it, he knew it was something he wanted to be a part of.

“Stephen A. Turner actually came up with the idea based on the similar college competition known as the Capital One Cup,” Holtrey said. “Vic Evans did all the research and calculations. When I heard about it I knew it was a no-brainer that this was something we wanted to get behind because it represents excellence across the board, which is a hallmark of our law firm.”

Holtrey said that he could see this becoming something that helps celebrate high school athletes for years to come, as they plan to grow the FWH Legal Cup and market it as an annual award. And trophies always help make things feel like a larger deal in competitions like this, with traveling trophies being presented to the overall school that wins.

“It is a 36” trophy with a large cup on top,” Holtrey said. “It will have plates for engraving the annual winners. It will be presented each year for the athletic director of the school who wins. We want to promote the award ceremony more each year.”

Holtrey hopes that the FWH Legal Cup will give boys and girls athletics from schools across the Third Region some incentive to compete at their highest level, hoping to make it something athletic directors have in the back of their minds for their programs. He’s thoroughly excited to start this venture with Cromwell Radio, as he looks forward to being a representative of support for local athletes.

“I just appreciate the folks at Cromwell Radio for having the vision to do something like this and I hope our community appreciates that our law firm truly supports our local student athletes,” Holtrey said.

The boys trophy was presented to Daviess County when they faced off with Henderson County on Friday night, while the Lady Aces will receive their trophy on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
