Owensboro Catholic and Daviess County baseball swept their respective doubleheaders on Wednesday, while Owensboro struggled to get on base in a narrow loss to Northeast.
Owensboro Catholic vs McIntosh, Bethlehem Christian Academy
The Aces swept their doubleheader to extend their winning streak to three games on Wednesday, defeating McIntosh and Bethlehem Christian Academy 2-0 and 9-1 respectively.
Owensboro Catholic took advantage of a walk with a two-run home run from sophomore Brady Atwell in the top of the third, putting them ahead of McIntosh 2-0. This would be all the Aces needed though, as seventh grader Jaxson White and eighth grader Lane Hundley handled things on the mound with the win and the save in the 2-0 win.
White tossed the first six innings in the start, allowing no runs or hits while walking two and striking out two. Hundley handled the final inning, allowing just two hits while earning a strikeout to complete the save.
Owensboro Catholic got a strong pitching performance in the second game as well, finding themselves up 2-1 going into the seventh inning. It was there that the offense came along too, taking advantage of a barrage of hits and free bases surrendered by Bethlehem Christian to score seven runs in the inning and eventually claim the 9-1 win.
Junior Ben Hyland did well in his start, allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Senior Jamison Wall handled the final inning, allowing no hits while walking two and striking out one.
Junior Elijah Blair, junior Deuce Sims and freshman Mason Moser led the way at the plate with a pair of RBIs each, while junior Houston Flynn chipped in one. The Aces improve to 7-4 overall with the pair of wins, as they now take some time off before returning home for the 3rd Region All A Classic with their first matchup against Hancock County at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 10.
Daviess County vs Sayre, Washington County
Daviess County put together a balanced attack in its doubleheader on Wednesday, defeating Sayre 6-3 and Washington County 4-1.
Senior Decker Renfow gave the Panthers the first lead of the game against Sayre with a one-run single in the top of the second, but an RBI groundout for Sayre evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Daviess County responded swiftly with a pair of singles from junior Lake Wilson and senior Layton Huskisson to lead off the top of the fifth, with a two-out double from senior Ethan Ahart making it a 3-1 ballagame.
The Panthers went on to surrender two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but three of their own in the top half of the inning had done enough damage and allowed them to walk away with the 6-3 win.
Wilson tossed a complete game in the win, allowing one earned run—three total—on five hits and one walk while striking out four. Meanwhile, Renfrow and Ahart led the way at the plate with three RBIs and two RBIs with 3-4 days respectively.
Renfrow also led the way at the plate in Daviess County’s second game, going 1-2 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third and an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. His single in the fifth was part of a three-run inning for the Panthers, which ultimately helped them secure the 4-1 victory.
Sophomore Noah Ranburger was the only other hitter for Daviess County to get an RBI, this one courtesy of a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Cason Troutman tossed a complete game to earn the win, allowing the one earned run on a walk and seven hits while striking out four.
Owensboro vs Northeast
The Red Devils had no answer for junior Dominic May at the plate on Wednesday, managing to tally just one hit in a 3-0 loss to Northeast.
Sophomore Blake Kimbrell was the only player to record a hit for Owensboro, while May went on to record 13 strikeouts innings in his complete-game shutout. Senior Connor Hallmark got the start for the Red Devils, taking the loss after giving up one earned run—three total—on five hits and three walks while striking out two.
Junior Kaleb Ashley handled the final inning of play, allowing just one hit and one walk. Owensboro falls to 5-4 overall with the loss, as they look to bounce back in their final spring break game against Santa Fe Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
