Owensboro split its doubleheader in an outpouring of runs against Oldham County and Caverna on Thursday, while the Lady Raiders and E-gals were dominant on both sides of the field in their respective wins to close out their spring break slates.

Trinity (Whitesville) vs Brookville

The Lady Raiders completed a clean sweep of the Grand Strand Softball Classic on Thursday, grabbing its second straight shutout win with the 8-0 victory over Brookville.

The Blue Devils seemed to have momentum on their side early, getting a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases to start the game. Senior Allie Barnett proceeded to get a fly out and a pair of strikeouts to end the inning though, and it was all Trinity from there on out.

Seventh grader Sophie Hatfield took advantage of a walk and a hit by pitch with a two-run single to put the Lady Raiders on the board in the bottom of the first, with an error later plating one more and giving them a 3-0 lead. Trinity kept rolling in the second as well, grabbing a pair thanks to some trickery that led to a steal of home and a run crossing on a throwing error to make it 5-0 after two.

While grabbing two in the fourth and one in the sixth, Trinity’s Barnett allowed just eight hits for Brookville in the contest while walking three and striking out five, as the Lady Raiders closed the door on an 8-0 win.

Hatfield and sophomore Madison McDaniel led the way at the plate for Trinity, grabbing a pair of RBIs each. The Lady Raiders improve to 8-6 overall with a four-game winning streak now under their belt, looking to carry this spring break momentum into a 3rd Region All A Classic matchup with Owensboro Catholic on Monday, April 10.

Owensboro vs Oldham County, Caverna

It was a tale of two games for the Lady Devils on Thursday, struggling to muster up enough offense in a 15-7 loss to Oldham County but destroying the ball in a 24-9 win over Caverna to close out the Florida Softball Beach Bash.

Owensboro grabbed seven hits for seven runs in their first game of the day, but a 10-run second inning for Oldham County had given them plenty of wiggle room as they went on to claim the 15-7 win—taking advantage of 15 hits and four Lady Devils errors.

Sophomore Kirsten Tindle was hit with the loss in the start, having tossed 1 ⅓ innings pitched with six earned runs surrendered—seven total—while striking out two. Senior K’Asia Palmer handled the last 4 ⅔ innings, giving up four earned runs—eight total—on nine hits and two walks while striking out five.

Palmer tossed another 4 ⅔ innings in Owensboro’s game against Caverna, allowing one unearned run on two hits and four walks, while striking out seven in the 24-9 win. Freshman Kierstin Hughes handled the other 1 ⅓ inning, allowing seven earned runs—eight total—on six hits while striking out three.

The Lady Devils had a monster day at the plate though, scoring five in the first, three in the second, seven in the fourth to claim the lead and nine in the sixth on a total of 20 hits in the game. Sophomore Hessi Johnson led the way with five RBIs on the day, while sophomore Keeley Harris, sophomore Addison Hill and Palmer all had three RBIs each, junior Sophie Moorman and junior Emmi Connor had two each, while freshman Reese Boswell and eighth grader India Allgood both had one RBI each.

Connor and Hill also homered in the win for Owensboro. The Red Devils sit at 3-8 after the split doubleheader, now taking some time off before hitting the road again to take on Union County at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12.

Apollo vs Bath County

Steady offense paired with some resiliency in the circle from senior Emmie Bullington led to Apollo’s third straight win on Thursday, topping Bath County 3-1 to close out the Florida Softball Beach Bash.

Bath County tried to set the tone for the game early, getting on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the second making it a 1-0 game. And while they kept getting hits, Bullington refused to surrender any more runs.

She tossed all seven innings and gave up 11 hits, but trusted her defense and gave up just the one run while walking nobody and striking out five. This led to the 3-1 win for Apollo, as an RBI double from junior Mallory Velotta in the bottom of the third, an RBI single from freshman Liza Paige and a run thanks to an error on a Paige ground ball in the bottom of the sixth gave the E-gals the offense they needed to finish a strong spring break.

Apollo improves to 3-5 overall with the win, as they’ll look to bring home some momentum into their second district game of the season on the road against Daviess County at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11.
