Rising senior Corynne Bean has found her niche this summer, taking a leadership roll working with the Gateway Grizzlies. The Grizzlies are a minor league baseball team based out of Sauget, Illinois, about 10 minutes away from St. Louis.

The star bowler holds multiple roles with the Grizzlies, most notably working in the box office and being the on-field host for the team. As the on-field host, Bean takes the mic and goes out in between innings to announce any antic that minor league baseball teams are famous for, such as fan of the game, commentating on a race along the sidelines with people dressed as hot dogs, etc.

How did you get this job?
“I’ve always wanted to get into broadcasting, so i simply went on Indeed and started looking up broadcasting internships. I saw the Grizzlies had an opening for a box office manager and broadcasting internship, and they weren’t to far from home so I applied. Two interviews later and I got the job. The emcee thing was suprising, as I thought I’d be more behind the scenes this year. I was originally the backup to help when need be, but I got called on one day to go out in front of everyone with no training and I loved it and have been doing it ever since.”

Favorite part of the job?

“I love meeting new people and being able to emcee. It sounds weird, but when I’m on the mic I tend to forget I’m talking to a few thousand people, I think of it as one crowd, not a ton of fans. We have a fairly young staff, so it makes for a super fun environment to be apart of.”

What are you hoping this job will this job lead to in the future?
“My goal is to eventually work in sports after college, and I’m hoping to be in the broadcasting side of things. Being able to learn how to be on a mic and control a crowd is really important, and I’m glad I’m able to learn that now. This job is also allowing me to make a lot of connections, which is really the name of the game.”

How does being a part of a collegiate bowling team help you in this job?
“My team at Kentucky Wesleyan is like my family, and I’ve tried to bring that mindset here with the Grizzlies. Just like bowling, if you work hard you will get better at your craft, and people notice that. When they see you working hard it shows people you care, and that helps the overall environment of both a collegiate team and work setting.”

What advice do you have for anyone who wants a job like this?

“Put yourself out there. As nice as it would be, jobs don’t just get handed to you, so you need to go out, find and pursue it. Work hard, make connections, be outgoing, and things will work out.”
