The 2023 soccer season gets underway this week, and we asked local coaches what to expect from their teams this season. Here’s the preview for the Owensboro Catholic boys’ team.

The Aces will start the season with at home against Butler County at 6 p.m. on August 7.

Owensboro Catholic finished last season with a record of 8-7-3 (2-5-0 9th District). The Aces are eager to find some postseason success in a competitive district, as they’ve been unable to win a tournament game since claiming the district and region championships in 2013.

Here’s what 12th-year head coach Andy Donohoe had to say about the upcoming season:

What are your expectations/goals for this year?
We will look to continue to build the program and progress further on the field. We have a group that are really good workers and have taken to the ideas we’ve challenged them with.

What will be the biggest challenges on the schedule?
There are plenty of challenges in both district and non-district games, but all district games offer a challenge that makes the competition in this area really special.

Who are your top returning players?
We have a few that I think will play a big role for this season. It’s difficult to name just one, but players like senior Brody Martin, junior Ben Dawson, and sophomores Luke Pfeifer and Joseph Kurtz will all play important roles for the group.

What areas are you hoping to improve on this year?
You hope to improve all areas of the team. We hope we can continue the work ethic of last year’s group and continue to build the team and program as it’s a young group.
