Owensboro Catholic and Apollo both came out victorious in their district matchups while Trinity suffered a close loss to Grayson County.
OCHS 3, OHS 0
Owensboro Catholic beat rivals Owensboro 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20) at home in front of a hyped up crowd. The Lady Red Devils may have lost the match, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort as they held leads in all three sets before the Lady Aces came back to complete the sweep.
OHS gained momentum early on and at one point led 11-5. The Lady Aces kicked into overdrive and climbed back to tie the score at 14-14. The teams continued to go about point for point, until OCHS etched away to win the set 25-23.
The second started as the first ended with both teams working hard on offense and defense to keep the score close until it was tied at 16-16. The Lady Aces held a constant 2-3 point lead as they took the second set 25-21.
The battle continued into the third set as the score stayed close at 12-10. The Lady Red Devils offensive play gave them a four-point lead, but Catholic again clawed back to tie it at 16-16. The Aces once again pulled away to win the final set 25-20.
Leading the scoring for the Lady Aces was Olivia Castlena and Tyranda Stuart with 13 and 12 kills respectively. On defense, Karsen Tipmore led the team with 15 digs.
For the Lady Red Devils, Addie Travis led the team in scoring with nine kills and an ace. The OHS defense was led by Rose Larsen who had 16 digs.
Owensboro head coach Melissa Hibbs said stopping their opponents’ scoring runs has been a frequent topic of conversation for the team. The effort was always there, but the lack of consistency on defense is what cost OHS their leads in the sets, she said.
“Defensively we always put in the hustle,” she said. “They did a pretty good job of hitting around the block, and our girls pushed for it but I think we needed a bigger block tonight. At times it came up big, but it just wasn’t as consistent as I would like to see. We just have to work on our consistency on our side and I think we’ll be fine going forward.”
Catholic often found themselves trailing towards the middle of each set, and this is due to self-sabotage, head coach Brian Hardison said.
“Owensboro played extremely well, but a lot of times we beat ourselves,” he said. “We did it alot tonight and made a bunch of hitting errors. Even on our blocking we had blocking errors. We’re trying to basically train our game up.”
AHS 3, DCHS 0
The E-gals were victorious over Daviess County 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-15) in their district matchup. Ahalia Ramirez ran the offense for the E-gals by setting up 28 assists. The score leader for AHS was Ava Fazio with kills and a block.
Lauren Jean led in scoring for the Lady Panthers with seven kills, one block and six digs. Kayla Jones led in assists with 11 as well as four blocks and four digs.
