The first round of the Boys’ State Golf Tournament ended with Daviess County’s Grant Broughton being the sole local golfer to advance to the final round. In the team competition, McCracken County placed first and Greenwood placed second overall.
The cutoff score to qualify for the final round was 77. Broughton scored exactly that and tied for 16th place as an individual to make it through. Broughton got off to a rough start but got into a rhythm by playing his last 12 holes at +1, Panthers head coach Lars King said. The greens at the course were an obstacle overcome, King said.
“Greens were different, and pins were rough too,” he said. “He had a tough time because of how grainy they were. They were so much faster downhill than up. Overall, it was a grind on the greens, but he made a clutch putt to advance.”
Apollo’s Trevor Cecil shot for 84 and tied for 59th place as an individual. Apollo head coach Jarrod Carter said it was a rough round for Cecil. Cecil had a hard time finding the green as well as setting himself up for par and birdie putts, Carter said.
Owensboro Catholic’s Luke Estes shot for 85. Estes tied for 62nd overall and missed the cutoff score of 77. Catholic head coach Andy Prusz said that the greens at the course were tough to adapt to for Estes too. Calvert City has bermuda greens while bent grass greens are what Estes is used to, he said.
The final round of the state tournament kicks off on October 6 in Bowling Green.
