Out of Owensboro schools, Owensboro Catholic’s Luke Estes, Apollo’s Trevor Cecil and Daviess County’s Grant Broughton placed in the top 10 individualists to qualify for the semi-state tournament. The Boys’ 2nd Region Golf Tournament finished with Ohio County and Madisonville–North Hopkins placing first and second place.
From the Owensboro schools, Daviess County placed seventh at regionals with a score of 333, Owensboro Catholic placed eighth with a score of 334, Owensboro placed 10th with a score of 335 and Apollo placed 14th with a score of 350.
Estes shot for 73 in regionals and tied for third in individuals. The sophomore will make his first semi-state appearance after he and Catholic placed fifth overall in regionals last year. Estes surprisingly shot for a career low at regionals this year, according to Catholic head coach Andy Prusz. That low couldn’t have come at a better time however as he still qualifies for semi-state and has been playing well all season, Prusz said.
“I’m super proud of the hard work he has put into the season and he is peaking at the right time,” he said.
Broughton shot for 76 and tied for seventh in individuals, thus securing his spot at semi-state. The junior is set to make his return to semi-state for the third year in a row after he and the Panthers placed second overall in regionals last year. Broughton placed second overall individually last year as well. He has made it to state before, and will have his eyes set on it again this year. DCHS head coach Lars King said consistency will be key if Broughton is to perform well next week.
“He just needs to continue to play solidly,” he said. “He has been playing great golf and had a fantastic weekend in Lexington at the KGCA Championship where he finished 12th. Putting is key. If he can putt well he has the ability to make it back to Bowling Green for state.”
Cecil shot for 76 and tied for seventh in individuals alongside Broughton. The senior will make his return to semi-state after making it last year when he placed eighth in regionals. Cecil will hope to cap off his final season with a state tournament appearance. Apollo head coach Jarrod Carter said this performance was a testament to the improvement Cecil has made here recently.
“He has worked really hard to push through some issues with the driver and putter over the last month,” he said. “Things started coming around for him during the city-county tournament.”
The semi-state tournament will take place on September 26.
