Baseball recap (April 20): AHS, DCHS, OHS, OCHS

Apollo and Owensboro Catholic both had successful games at home while Daviess County and Owensboro both took to the road for their respective games. 

AHS 1, Henry Clay 0

Apollo hosted Henry Clay in a close game that ended with AHS taking the 1-0 win. 

Defenses were on display in this game as AHS and Henry Clay both held each other scoreless for the first four innings of the game. The Eagles broke the deadlock in the fifth inning when Lane Skinner managed to make it home off of an error. Apollo held off Henry Clay in the final 2 innings to secure the 1-0 win. 

On the mound was Noah Cook who recorded 9 strikeouts and allowed only 2 hits to help keep Henry Clay scoreless. Grayson Smith had 3 hits on the day.

Logan Co. 15, DCHS 2

Daviess County traveled to Logan County where they suffered a 15-2 defeat. 

Both teams would get on the scoreboard in the first inning as Logan held a 2-1 win. Logan then jumped ahead with 6 runs in the second inning. Logan extended their lead with 2 runs in the third and 5 in the fifth before DC could score another run in the fifth. The game called after the fifth inning and saw Logan take the win 15-2. 

On the mound, Weston Lawrence pitched for 1.2 innings and had 1 strikeout, and Benjamin Watkins pitched 2.1 innings. At the plate, Mason Russelberg and Gavin Howard both had 1 RBI, and the runs were scored by Lucas Ward. 

OHS 11, Muhlenberg Co. 1

Owensboro had a big 11-1 win on the road against Muhlenberg County. 

Owensboro took an early lead after scoring 3 runs to Muhlenberg’s 1 run in the first inning. They added another run to their lead in the second inning. After a scoreless third inning, the Red Devils would go on to score 1 run in the fourth, 1 in the fifth and 5 runs in the sixth inning to close out an 11-1 win. 

Lake Wilson was on the mound for OHS and he recorded 8 strikeouts while allowing just 3 hits across 6 innings. At the plate, Wilson had 2 RBIs and scored 1 run. Evan Hampton had a big game with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, 4 hits, and 2 scored runs. Blake Kimbrell hit a double, had 2 RBIs and scored 1 run. Elijah Hampton, Cayden Ray and Will Rickard all had 1 RBI. Ray, Kimbrell, Ty Ashley, Brady Benjamin and Will Rickard all scored 1 run each. 

OCHS

Owensboro Catholic hosted Union County and Adair County at home where they won both games by a big margin.

They first took down Union County 12-2. Catholic got to work quickly as they scored 4 runs in the opening inning. Union scored 2 runs in top of the second, but the Aces further separated the gap with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning. OCHS added another 3 runs to their lead in the third inning, and they scored a final run in the fifth to end the game 12-2. 

On the mound, Jaxson White had 4 strikeouts in 4 innings and Brady Prusz had 1 strikeout in 1 inning. Deuce Sims, Parker Heistand and Alex Hood all had 2 RBIs. Brady Atwell had 1 RBI and scored 2 runs, and Reece Sims had 1 RBI as well. Houston Flynn scored 3 runs, Eli Blair scored 2 runs and Jake Murphy, Jude Evans, Barrett Evans and Drew Miles all scored 1 run each. 

The Aces then had a big 13-3 win over Adair County. They once again got off to a strong start as they led 4-0 through the first three innings. Adair got on the board with 1 run in the top of the fourth, but OCHS scored 2 of their own in the bottom of the inning. After Adair scored 2 more in an effort to claw back, Owensboro Catholic scored a final 7 runs in the fifth innings to end the game at 13-3. 

Atwell led the team with a big performance at the plate where he hit a home run, had 4 RBIs and scored 2 runs. Christopher Burns, White and Mason Moser all had 2 RBIs, and Flynn and Myles Grant both had 1. Scoring runs for OCHS was Flynn with 3 runs, White and Sims with 2 runs scored and Moser and Murphy with 1 run each. On the mound, Ben Hyland pitched for 4 innings and had 6 strikeouts while allowing 1 hit. Lane Hundley had 2 strikeouts in inning as well.
