Softball recap (April 20): AHS, OHS

Apollo played two successful games on the road while Owensboro played three games as part of the Muhlenberg County Lady Mustang Stampede.

AHS

 Apollo took to the road where they defeated both Christian County and Graves County. 

Apollo beat Graves County in a game that ended 5-2. The game started out evenly as both teams helped each other scoreless in the first two innings. Apollo struck first with a run in the third inning before Graves struck back in the top of the third with a run of their own. Apollo took back the lead in the bottom of the same inning with 3 runs. They extended their lead with 1 final run in the fifth before Graves scored 1 run in the seventh, AHS took the win 5-2.

On the mound for the E-gals was Hannah Holder and Mollie Julian who both had 3 strikeouts each. At the plate, Taylor Clark hit a home run, had 3 RBIs and scored 2 runs. Macy Calhoun had 1 RBI as well, and the other runs were scored by Liza Page, Abbie Butterworth and Grace Parker. 

Apollo also had a comfortable 7-1 win over Christian County. Both teams held each other scoreless for the first two innings before trading runs in the third. The E-gals the took the lead with 3 runs in the next inning. The fifth inning saw AHS add two more runs to their lead before they closed out the game with a final run in the sixth. 

Arianna Ramirez led the team at the plate with not just one, but 2 home runs, 3 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Parker, Clark and Madalyn Roberts all had 1 RBI, and Mallory Velotta, Calhoun, Clark and Page all scored 1 run each. On the mound for AHS was Julian who recorded 8 strikeouts across 7 innings. 

OHS

Owensboro competed in the Muhlenberg County Lady Mustang Stampede where they played three high-scoring games. 

They received their only loss on the day from Logan County in a 16-7 defeat. Both teams came out swinging as OHS had a 5-4 lead after the first inning. Logan added another 5 runs to their tally across the next two innings, and Owensboro brought back two for the runs in the third and fourth. OHS tried to come back, but Logan scored 7 runs in the sixth to close out the game at 16-7. 

At the plate, Haylie Sikes hit a triple, had 3 RBIs and scored 1 run. Emmi Connor, Alyssa Rhineburger, Reese Boswell and Sophie Moorman all had 1 RBI. Moorman also hit 2 triples and scored 1 run. Ellington Embry and Hessi Johnson both hit a double and scored 1 run. Boswell scored 1 run as well. On the mound, Rhineburger had 1 strikeout across 2.2 innings and Railey Scotts had 1 strikeout in 3.1 innings.

The Lady Red Devils then had a close 6-5 victory over Hopkins County. OHS had a hot start as they scored 6 runs across the first three innings. After both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, Hopkins got on the scoreboard with 2 runs in the sixth. Hopkinsville came close to tying the game in the seventh inning as they scored 3 runs, but Owensboro’s defense shut them down to end the game at 6-5. 

On the mound for the Lady Red Devils was Scott who had 5 strikeouts across 7 innings. Connor and Sikes both hit a triple, had 1 RBI, and Connor scored 2 runs while Sikes scored 1. Moorman, Anna Hamilton, Mercedes Allgood and Boswell all had 1 RBI. Taylor Sowders and Ayrish Barksdale both scored 1 run each as well. 

Finally, the Lady Red Devils had an intense 13-10 win over Lyon County. Both teams started out strong as Lyon County held a 4-3 lead after the first two innings. After a scoreless third inning, Owensboro took the lead in the top of the fourth with 3 runs while Lyon scored 1 in the bottom of the inning. Lyon County scored 5 runs in the fifth and sixth innings but OHS scored 7 runs in the final three innings to win 13-10. 

On the mound, Rhineburger pitched for 4 innings and had 1 strikeout while Scott pitched for 3 innings. At the plate, Moorman had a big game with a home run, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, 3 hits and 3 runs scored. Addison Hill hit a triple, a double had 2 RBIs, 3 hits and scored 1 run. Boswell had 2 RBIs and scored 2 runs, and Embry hit a double while scoring 2 runs. Johnson, Hamilton and Rhineburger all had 1 RBI. Barksdale scored 3 runs during the game as well.
