Gavin Wimsatt’s first scholarship offer from a Power 5 school came from the University of Kentucky in May of 2020, but he took his talents to Rutgers University, where he eventually earned the starting quarterback role. However, Wimsatt recently entered the transfer portal and UK is now back on his radar, as multiple reports are saying he’s visiting with the Wildcats.

Wimsatt arrived at Rutgers in 2021 by enrolling early after ending his high school career just two games into his senior season.

Last season, Wimsatt accounted for 20 touchdowns (11 rushing, 9 passing) and threw for 1,735 yards to go along with a Rutgers quarterback record of 497 rushing yards. He helped lead the team to a 31-24 win over Miami in the 2023 Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, scoring on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs. It was the first winning season for the Scarlet Knights since 2014.

However, in the offseason Rutgers added Minnesota transfer Athan Kaliakmanis, who was named the new starting quarterback last week. Wimsatt entered the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

Kentucky Sports Radio (KSR) host Matt Jones reported on May 6 that Wimsatt was in Lexington to visit with UK coaches.

According to KSR, the Wildcats are expected to rely heavily on Brock Vandagriff as QB1 next season. Vandagriff is a graduate transfer after spending three seasons at Georgia and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Beau Allen, who came back to Kentucky as a graduate transfer after one season at Georgia Southern and one at Tarleton State, is expected to be the backup quarterback, according to KSR.

True freshman quarterback Cutter Boley, a graduate of Lexington Christian Academy, is also on the roster.

Wimsatt did not return requests for comment.
