Owensboro Catholic’s own Olivia McPherson has signed to play collegiate golf for Brescia University in November. McPherson finished her senior season with the Lady Aces golf team this past fall where she helped OCHS to a 4th place finish at regionals.
McPherson also received a scholarship to help her start her college career, and she considers signing as a Bearcat an honor, she said.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to play golf at the college level and represent Brescia because it means my skills have been recognized,” she said.
Being able to go to college in her hometown is one perk, but McPherson also was keen to continue her academic career in a Catholic environment. Representing the city of Owensboro is something that she took pride in, and signing with the Bearcats means that she gets to continue that as well.
“It’s a local university,” she said. “I wanted to continue my education in a Catholic environment. It’s good knowing that I’m going to college in my hometown. I’ll still be representing Owensboro as well as Brescia when playing colleges around the country.”
While attending Brescia McPherson plans on studying in the nursing field. Since her senior season came to a close, preparation has been a key focus. McPherson has been making her rounds at local golf courses and driving ranges to get as much practice as she can.
“To get ready for my freshman season I’ve been practicing at the local golf courses, driving ranges and I’ve been going to the gym.”
With her freshman year beginning in just a few month’s time, McPherson looked back on what she’ll miss the most from her high school career. OCHS head coach Jenny Burns was at the top of her list, but her time as a high school student with limited responsibilities is a close second, she said.
“I’ll miss my golf coach the most,” she said. “I’ll also miss the high school days of having less responsibility.”
