While most teams have a bye week due to Fall Break, Daviess County is looking to carry forward their momentum after picking up their first win in their last game. The Panthers were on a bye last week and have had 2 weeks to prepare for tonight’s home matchup against Christian County.
The Panthers (1-5) and Colonels (0-6) will be vying for playoff positioning, as they are both in Class 6A, District 1. In last year’s matchup, the Panthers emerged victorious 24-16.
“We need to play hard, play effective, and be efficient,” Daviess County head coach Anthony Payton said. “Limit mistakes and put a full four quarters together.”
DC won their first game of the season 22-6 against Warren County 2 weeks ago behind Gatlin Maysey’s 215 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Coming off of a bye, the Panthers enter tonight rested and with a fresh mindset.
“We spent the bye week focusing on working hard,” Payton said. “We needed to push harder.”
In their win against Warren Central, the Panthers still allowed more than 200 rushing yards, an area Payton wants to focus on against the Colonels. Payton mentioned that Christian County has plenty of skilled players on both sides of the ball despite what their record may suggest.
“I expect them to come in with a chip on their shoulder and try and get a win,” he said. “That’s what a competitive team is going to do. They will focus on running the ball, but they may mix in some new looks.”
Daviess County will look to spread the ball out and take what the defense gives them.
“We will be aggressive and take shots,” Payton said. “We need to put drives together, read the coverages, and execute.”
