The Owensboro Red Devils asserted their dominance early, steamrolling Ohio County 58-0 in the first round of the Class 5A football playoffs. The victory propelled the Red Devils to an 8-3 record and set up a rematch with Bowling Green at home next week.
Owensboro started strong, with junior running back Evan Hampton scoring two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. After Hampton’s six-yard opening score, he found the end zone again to extend the lead to 14-0. The OHS defense got in on the scoring action, recording a safety after the Eagles were pinned deep. Later in the quarter, Hampton delivered a stunning 56-yard touchdown run down the sideline, pushing the Red Devils further ahead.
Sophomore Omarian Green also made a mark, hauling in a 35-yard catch to set up his own two-yard touchdown run. Green continued to put on a performance, rushing 45 yards for a touchdown after his 60-yard punt return was called back due to holding. Green’s impact didn’t go unnoticed by head coach Jay Fallin, who praised his explosive play and rugged durability.
“He’s rugged, durable, and tough to bring down,” Fallin said.
Fallin added that Green and Evan Hampton set up a dynamic backfield.
Owensboro’s defense was unyielding, with Kalil Shemwell intercepting an Ohio County pass to regain possession on the Eagles’ 30-yard line. Senior quarterback Trevor Delacey connected with sophomore Braden Burk for a 15-yard touchdown to close the first half with a 44-0 lead.
The Red Devils continued their scoring spree in the second half, as freshman running back Mikai Kindle dashed 35 yards to the end zone in the third quarter. In the final frame, reserve quarterback Zeke Beehn found freshman Traevion Dillard in the end zone, sealing Owensboro’s 58-0 triumph.
“We wanted to approach this game with focus and respect,” Fallin said. “Ohio County’s coaching staff had a solid plan, and we didn’t want to make the game longer than it needed to be. I’m pleased with our execution and that we got out injury-free.”
With the victory, Owensboro now sets its sights on the second round, where they will host a familiar playoff foe.
“We knew we would likely face Bowling Green,” Fallin said. “The last time we beat them was in a second-round playoff game here, so we’re excited about the opportunity to play them again on our field.”
