Owensboro beat Warren Central, while the Aces lost a heartbreaker in penalty kicks.
Owensboro 1, Warren Central 1
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Ethan Valezquez found Denis Juma for the equalizer as the Red Devils drew with Warren Central 1-1. Due to the Dragons’ speed, Owensboro changed tactics in the second half, opting to sit back and tighten up on the field.
“In the second half, we found success on a rare press resulting in an Ethan Yader assist to Denis Juma for the tying goal,” Owensboro Head Coach Ryan Haley said. “As the clock reached the 10-minute mark, I released our boys, and we went full press. During this time, we had about four chances to win the game. Peter Mbayo had a shot off the post as well. The result of a tie is one we can grow on. We learned a lot during the game today and look forward to using what we gained in future matches.”
Todd County Central 4, Owensboro Catholic 3
Competing in the All A 3rd/4th Region qualifier, Owensboro Catholic fell to Todd County Central 4-3 in penalty kicks. Jaxyn Rundall, Andrew Bailey, and JW Kurtz all scored for the Aces, while Isaac Self, Owen Brey, and Sam Brauer all recorded assists. Starting in goal, Jace Obermeier finished with five saves.
“This was a difficult one to take,” Owensboro Catholic Head Coach Andy Donohoe said. “For parts of the game we played very well, but in other parts the intensity wasn’t right. We dominated the second half, but just couldn’t make it count. So, it feels like this one got away. Penalties can always be a lottery, and credit to Todd County Central for making it difficult, and good luck to them in the All A.”
