Hancock County football hung tough early, but Mayfield pulled away to earn a 55-0 victory Friday night in the second round of the KHSAA state football playoffs.
The Hornets trailed just 7-0 after the opening period, leaning on their defense to keep the Cardinals in check. But Mayfield struck only seconds into the second quarter and quickly seized control, building a 35-0 lead by halftime.
The Cardinals continued to extend their advantage after the break, and the running clock helped speed the final two quarters as Hancock County saw its postseason run come to an end.
Head coach Bobby Eubanks said he was proud of the way his team competed throughout the season.
“I’m proud of our kids and coaches. It’s been a great year for us,” Eubanks said. “Our kids battled all year and we were playing some of our best football at the end of the year. As a coach that’s all you can ask for.”
He added that the senior class left a strong mark on the program.
“This senior group has been a great one,” Eubanks said. “They created a standard we can build on in the future. The program is in better shape because of them.”
Hancock County finishes the season 8-4.
