The Hancock County Hornets asserted their dominance early, rolling past Caldwell County 41-0 in the first round of the Class 2A football playoffs. The victory propelled the Hornets to an 8-3 record and set up a showdown with powerhouse Mayfield next week.

“Anytime you get a win in the playoffs, it’s a special night,” Hancock County Head Coach Robert Eubanks said. “We play all year to get this opportunity. Even though we were the higher seed, no one gave us much of a chance. Our guys came to play football, and it showed at the end of the game.”

Riding their run game, the Hornets took a 21-0 lead into halftime after Brady Eubanks found the endzone twice and Trip Hager also ran in for a score. In the third quarter, Eubanks scored his third rushing touchdown of the game to push the lead to 28-0.

Down the stretch, Hager flashed his arm with touchdown passes to Hunter Greathouse and Cooper Jones for the exclamation point.

Hancock County’s defense held Caldwell County to 105 total yards. Eubanks led the ground attack with 130 yards and three touchdowns, while Jones finished with 193 total yards. Hager finished 4-7 for 97 passing yards and two touchdowns and added 96 yards and a score on the ground.

“I’m proud of our players and coaches,” Eubanks said. “We had a great game plan coming into this week and we were the better team.”
